I am surprised but very glad this is happening. We (consumers) don't need a bunch of incompatible proprietary protocols that force users into limited, more expensive choices when expanding our home networks. Now if only the notebook industry would get together and cooperate on an ATX Form Factor type standard for notebooks (like there is for PCs), it would really be a great day for consumers.
Arris made the first product to support the open Wi-Fi mesh networking standard The standard was set earlier this year August 12, 2018 https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/12/17681172/arris-wifi-mesh-router-vap4641-easymesh-standard
