Why would a website have a twin, and why would they avoid talking about it?

I had to do this with my website at some point, because the server at which it was located was corrupting all the tables and forcing us to use the backups almost every week. At some point, users could only login. Then we moved on to a new server with a totally new forum board (from IPS) and left the old forum as read-only.

Now, why that forum has an exact copy of itself, I have no idea o_O There's no point in doing so.
