If you use the COMPACT feature prior to the image, "Image For Windows" (IFW) can also do this.

Macrium Reflect can do this also. Did it twice on two machines that I moved to smaller SSD drives.

True Image can do it. I used it to clone a hard drive with multiple partitions to a smaller SSD, and it did all automatically with no problems.

It depends on data spread on partition?

I wrote Tom about that and no. You can find the smallest drive it can be restored to, in the properties "Under View Image File as Drive"...

    rrrh1 (arch1)

    Edit:

You can not restore an image with a required size of 226826MB to a disk with 149000MB. You can mount the image as virtual disk and copy the whole contents with xcopy or robocopy.

    OR

If the operating system is Windows Vista or later you can shrink the partition before you make the backup. This can be done with the Windows disk management. Choose a partition size smaller than the new disk size. Afterwards make a new backup. This backup can be restored with Snapshot to the new disk.

    End of Edit...

Thanks for the information. It's a hassle with the workaround. It would be much better if Tom could make Drive Snapshot restore to a smaller partition.

    It works in windows only.

I have done a few drives in the past.

Farstone have just released 2013 updated products"

DriveClone allows you to make a mirror copy of your drive (Mirror Drive) with incremental cloning & file version backup. Mirror Drive is bootable and it keeps records of all of your files, and their historical versions. DriveClone fully supports the latest Windows 8.1, Windows 2012 Server, new hardware systems (including UEFI, GPT, & RAID computers), all sizes of drives (from 120GB to bigger than 4TB drives), and all type of drives (including eSATA/IDE/SATA/SAS), and all brands (including WD/Seagate/Fujitsu/Toshiba).

DriveClone makes an exact copy of disk drives, including hard drives, solid state drives(SSD), hybrid drives, & RAID drives. DriveClone will clone & copy Windows entirely, including all files/folders, applications, registries, favorites, settings, and partitions. DriveClone will resize partitions automatically when clone to different size drive. The cloned drive is immediately bootable.

Also it supports universal cloning, bootable on different hardware = We like it

So people know about farstones history, they have been around while.

Founded in 1993, FarStone Technology, Inc. is a pioneer ISO-9001 certified PC & server backup software company. With headquarters in California, USA, and offices in Taiwan and China, this private company owns 30 backup related technology patents worldwide. We specialize in PC backup & recovery, Windows server backup, VMware & Hyper-v server backup, SQL, Exchange & other database server backup, and other application server backup.

Storagecraft's Shadow Protect can do this but you might need to mount the image first on another computer and defragment the mounted image, it just depends how much smaller the target drive is than the original. You have to mount the image writeable of course, so you will want to make a copy of the original image.

I've never encountered the need to do this on imaging software before like Acronis or Ghost, but it's a small price to pay for what I have found to be the most reliable "set it and forget" imaging backup software. BTW, I'm not on anyone's payroll! Other products are available etc etc
