Need a good DVD-writer, but dont know which one to choose.

    1. What is DVD-RAM, and what do in need it for?

    2. What does "support for bitsetting" mean? Do i need it?

    3. Of the following two, which one would you pick? And why? BenQ DW1655 and NEC AD-7173. BenQ support Lightscribe, while NEC support DVD-RAM.

    4. Other suggestions? Maybe one that has it all.

    5. What is the best DVD+R and DVD+RW disc to use for backup? (Manufactor, single- or doublelayer etc)

    1. DVD-RAM is very reliable type of DVD typically used for backing up data. u can go to wikipedia if u want more info

    2. the booktype field (bitsetting) identifies the disc as DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W), or DVD-R(W).

for example: by changing the booktype field, u can fool DVD player into thinking a DVD-R is a DVD-ROM.

    3. I have a NEC dvd-writer and i like it very much, but im not familiar with the AD-7173 model. afaik, their latest model is ND-4570.

    4. samsung SH-S182 (ive never tried it tho).

    5. ive only used maxwell dvd-r (thus far) and they seem reliable enough.

u can also try dvds from memorex. their cd-r(w)s are good at least.

Thanks for the link to the DVD-RAM info WSFuser.
If your only concern is for archiving or data backup, then DVD-RAM looks a lot better than the DVD+RW or DVD-RW 2-4 year life span.

Here is a guide to quality blank DVD media:

You probably only want first class media. Scroll down to the branding section to see who makes which DVDs. For me, I buy Verbatim made by Mitsubishi Chemical Company.

    Thanks to all of you.

    Maybe I go for NEC.

In Scandinavia there are now three new models: AD-5170, AD-7170 and AD-7173.

    Hi,

MaximumPC rates Plextor 755 & 760A "Kick Ass", the 760A will write at 18x, with suggested media type. I currently use the 760A & its the best drive I've ever used. Previous drives I've used, which are pale by comparison were Pioneer, NEC 3500A.

The best you can do for media type is "Taiyo Yuden" note many companies try to make knockoffs of this disk. Taiyo Yuden is only mfg'd in Japan & is far superior to all other disks!

    Take Care

    Thats what I have.

Works perfectly, cant say its better or worse than any other DVD burner, but I bought it on recommendation of being a very good quality writer, so far has been flawless.

Think I will go for NEC AD-7173 or Samsung SH-S182D.

They are much the same, but NEC support LabelFlash. Samsung does not support LabelFlash or LightScribe. I believe LightScribe is more common than LabelFlash, so the best would perhaps be a DVD-writer that supports both DVD-RAM and LightScribe.

If I am right, none of them is delivered with Nero or other software.

Just found this one: LG GSA-H20L

    Lightscribe, DVD-RAM 16x read and 5x write. DVD+/-R 16x. +/-R DL 12x.

With RecordNow!(Sonic), DLA(Sonic),WinDVDCreator, MyDVD, Nero Express(Ahead). What is all this? I know about Nero, but this must be an old, stripped version? What about the rest?

LG quality, good or not so good?

    RecordNow!(Sonic) - cd/dvd burning program
DLA(Sonic) - lets u format cd/dvd so that u can use it like a floppy. in other words, u can drag (save) files to teh disc directly.
WinDVDCreator and MyDVD - dvd authoring
