We never get tired of this question, do we?
Going off in a direction tangential to this rectangular hyperbole of a thread...
Kav will find a virus even if a file has been renamed!!! Just submit your Quarantine to KAV... It even tried mess ith my friend's System Restore!!!
By the way... Can anyone explain in simple, everyday PC usage terms, and long paragraphs.. WHAT'S SANDBOXING?
Even if ya post a link, I promise I won't be as uneducated the next time you see me. Really.

    To everyone from Firefighter!

Just added McAfee VS Pro 8.0.41 (engine 4.3.20) to my scanning table in post 39 this thread. Unfortunaly unable to update engine to 4.4.40.

PS: How I can get a proper scan log in McAfee 8.0 Pro and exclude folders from real time scan?

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Sorry bellgamin if I did a mistake.
I just quote other post and do not intend to be annoying to anybody. Sometimes, as soon I post in Wilders, come someone blaming with me :'(

Kaspersky among all its competitors, at least for me comes out on top in terms of virus detection capability seconded with F-Secure Antivirus 2004 i used earlier in the year.Panda is good too and Symantec doesnt lag behind as well but its false virus alerts mostly made my life miserable in the not so distant past so i got rid of it and installed Panda.Kaspersky Rules.

In overall detection yes, but without trojanlike nasties, I think McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i is the best.

If you'll look at the recent and not-so recent tests from av-test.org and av-comparatives.org you'll notice that there are 2 AV programs that always do better than everybody else, McAfee and KAV, in no particular order. And while people may preferences with regards to choosing one AV over the other, its indisputable that all the other AV vendors are playing for 3rd place.

Hey firefighter, scan engine 4400 won't be available for McAfee 8.0/9.0 home builds until mid-December according to Network Associates. From what i understand all Enterprise versions have the new engine.

And i couldn't agree more, i think McAfee 8.0i is the best overall AV out there right now. If anybody's interested in getting a hold of this marvelous program simply go to and click on the "downloads" link, followed by the "tools and utilities" link, McAfee 8.0i is the very first download option.

url removed as it led to illegal download of mcafee 8.0i==bigc

  18. Scanner Malware name Time taken
    AntiVir X 2.69 seconds
    Avast X 4.62 seconds
    BitDefender X 6.99 seconds
    ClamAV X 14.30 seconds
    Dr.Web X 9.25 seconds
    F-Prot Antivirus X 1.25 seconds
    Kaspersky Anti-Virus Backdoor.Win32.Haxdoor.al 8.79 seconds
    mks_vir Trojan.Haxdoor.Al 2.76 seconds
    NOD32 probably unknown NewHeur_PE 6.93 seconds
Norman Virus Control X 31.93 seconds

    --------------------------------------------

Just wanted to point out that two have a NAME for the virus "haxdoor"....KAV and MKS. Although NOD detected it, it apparently wasn't in the database yet, thus the naming convention they used. If the "big guys" share virus info, why didn't they have a def for it....or the others listedo_O

The name indicates that NOD detected it Heuristically not by a definition hence it didn't know the name. It is also worth noting that NOD detected it FASTER with heuristics than KAV did with a definition.

Last I heard about F-secure, it had the largest database in terms of no of definitions, quite good heuristics, and a completely useless configuration scheme (could NEVER understand it)
McAfee on the other hand has gotten faster and faster (doing to Norton now, what it had done to McAfee a few years back)... though its firewall is the worst in terms of configurability.
Panda... not good in my books (way too heavy on my old system, compared to latest norton in mid/late 2003 I guess... Celeron 433MHz WinME 128MB Ram)
Good article btw... tho' I think unpacking zip and rar is of no use, as when the OS reads the unpacked files, the AV kicks in.
