Android 13 is almost here, and it’s a pretty minor update from Google.
Android 13 is more of a tune-up to the engine that powers your phone than anything else. But it’s still one worth getting excited for.

As for timelines, Google says it’s releasing Android 13 in either August or September, with the Pixels getting it first and the likes of Samsung and Oppo following shortly after. Here’s when you can expect it to land on your phone.

Android 13 arrives for Pixel phones starting today
Google’s major OS update is a little early this year

This year’s major Android update, Android 13, is officially releasing today for Google’s Pixel phones, the search giant has announced.

The list of updates arriving with this year’s version of Android is likely to be familiar if you’ve been keeping up with Android 13’s beta releases. There’s the ability to customize non-Google app icons to match your homescreen wallpaper that we saw in Android 13’s first developer preview, a new permission to cut down on notification spam, and a new option to limit which of your photos and videos an app can access.

Secondly, there’s the ability to stream messages from apps including Google Messages directly to a Chromebook, similar to iMessage on the Mac. It’s another feature that Google detailed in January.
The update also includes a feature that lets you copy content from an Android phone to be pasted on an Android tablet and vice versa.

Other Android 13 features include the ability to set languages on a per-app basis, a redesigned media player that adjusts its look based on what you’re listening to, support for Bluetooth Low Energy for better sound quality at lower bitrates and reduced latency, improved multitasking on large-screen devices with drag and drop support for multitasking, and better palm rejection when using styluses.

On this support page, Google broke down which Pixels are getting the Android 13 update today (the Pixel 4, 5, and 6 families of devices), as well as a long list of fixes it includes. A developer page where you can download the images before the update is pushed to your device automatically also notes that upgrading to Android 13, at least with a factory image, is a one-way trip — a bootloader update included with it means you won’t be able to flash back to Android 12.

PSA: You can’t downgrade from Android 13 on Google’s latest Pixel phones

Android 13 was just released for Google’s Pixel smartphones, and you can install it right away by going to your phone’s settings and checking for an update. However, if you have a Google Pixel 6, Google Pixel 6 Pro, or a Google Pixel 6a, then be warned: trying to roll back to Android 12 after updating will trip your phone’s anti-rollback protection. This means that the update to Android 13 is essentially permanent.

We spotted the warning on the Android 13 factory images page, where it says the following:

“The Android 13 update for Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and the Pixel 6a contains a bootloader update that increments the anti-roll back version. After flashing an Android 13 build on these devices you will not be able to flash older Android 12 builds.”

If you use your phone normally and don’t flash between different system images, then you have nothing to worry about. However, if you’re the kind of person that likes to jump between different versions, maybe hold off for a little bit. It’s not clear if you’ll actually brick your phone by downgrading after updating to Android 13, but it’s better to be safe than sorry and to wait and see what happens. You also don’t need to worry about it if you’re using an older Google Pixel phone.

As for why this only affects the latest Pixel phones, it’s not clear.

Google posts additional instructions for Pixel 6 owners that flashed Android 13

With Android 13, Google made it so that the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a cannot reinstall Android 12 in order to address a security issue. In addressing that vulnerability, another problem might arise, and Google has released instructions on how to avoid bricking your device if you flashed Android 13.
If you flashed Android 13
Google on Thursday afternoon provided instructions on how to avoid that particular issue from arising. It involves flashing the inactive slot from Android 12 to Android 13. The simplest option is sideloading an OTA image – which updates the inactive slot – but steps for using factory images are also provided.

This process is primarily aimed at those (i.e. tinkerers) who are going to reflash their devices either with a factory or custom image (built from AOSP).

Meanwhile, Google in the coming days will update the Android Flash Tool – which flashes the active slot, like fastboot – with a prompt to flash the inactive slot with the Android 13 bootloader.

The company also tells us that there’s a very low chance of running into the issue for the overwhelming majority of users with locked bootloaders. The next OTA (presumably the September security patch) or sideload will update the inactive slot.

Nothing Phone (1) won’t get Android 13 until next year

Android 13 has been available for over a week on Pixel phones, and it’s already in beta on devices from Samsung, OnePlus, and more. Now, we’re getting a timeline for Android 13 on the Nothing Phone (1), but it’s not exactly around the corner.

However, the update commitment on the Nothing Phone (1) isn’t exactly top-tier. The device is promised three years of major Android updates and four years of bi-monthly security updates. By comparison, Google offers three years of major Android updates and five years of monthly security updates on its latest Pixels, and Samsung offers four years of major Android updates on its Galaxy smartphones.

When asked about the timeline for Android 13 for the Nothing Phone (1) last week, Carl Pei didn’t offer any useful information, essentially saying that it doesn’t matter.

Now, Nothing has confirmed a timeline. Speaking to the folks over at Android Authority, Nothing says that the Android 13 update for the Nothing Phone (1) won’t arrive until the first half of 2023, meaning it’s at least four months away from release.

The launch of stable Android 13 on Google's Pixel phones nearly two weeks ago was a signal that the update would soon arrive on third-party devices, and Motorola is the latest to announce an initial list of its phones that will receive the treatment.

Motorola has quietly revealed a total of 10 Moto devices in line for the update, including many of its [...] Android phones and budget phones (via GSMArena).
The complete list of devices can be found on Motorola’s security updates page, though you'll need to do some digging in order to figure out which phones will be treated to Android 13. Simply go to the “Select your product” tab, and choose any of the Moto family of devices.

That said, it's not yet known when these handsets will pick up the latest version of Android. The Lenovo-owned company has lagged behind in recent times when it comes to software updates.
While Android 13 isn't yet available on many devices, it's encouraging to see Motorola jump on board despite having put its software update efforts on the backburner.

Google gives developers a way to sidestep Android 13’s one-way update
Google posts an anti-rollback workaround, but only for developers.

With the rollout of Android 13 to the Pixel 6 and 6a, Google posted an interesting warning on the system image website: Once you flash Android 13, you can never go back to the old version. That's still the case for anyone wanting a fully functional phone, but now, Google has posted an Android 12 "developer support image" that will let developers roll back their phones even after upgrading. The "developer" branding on the image means it's not fully functional, but it will be good enough for app testing.

The reason for Google's one-way Android 13 update is a bootloader vulnerability. The bug is in the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a, so only those Pixels got a one-way update. Android 13 has a fix for the bootloader vulnerability, and to stop attackers from rolling back a device to get around the patch, the company triggered anti-rollback protection on the Pixel 6 and 6a. Anti-rollback protection blows a physical fuse inside the phone SoC.

This "developer support image" is new territory for Google. The company says this special image of Android 12 fixes the bootloader bug and has the fuse counter incremented so it will still boot. It won't get any automatic updates, though, and it's not Compatibility Test Suite (CTS)‑approved.

Today marks the first update to the distribution chart in 2023 and offers our first glimpse of how quickly Android 13 is being delivered to devices. According to Android Studio, devices running Android 13 now account for 5.2% of all devices. Meanwhile Android 12 and 12L now account for 18.9% of the total, a significant increase from August’s 13.5% figure.

No doubt the speed of Android 13’s adoption is thanks in part to the rapid roll out of updates by phone makers including Google, Samsung, OnePlus, Sony, and more.

I just got it a few days ago after more than 3 months of not so much as a security patch. Samsung is still pretty slack on updates despite the phone sites claiming otherwise.
