Did you register and receive the free license via email, open the Avast gui > maintenance > registration > insert license key?

But really, was not that pretty much the position Avast! 4.8 stood at?
somewhere in the top four or six?

For the advances (if you see them) in Avast! 5 to be that big a deal you must assume the others have stood still.

    Symantec has not stood still.
    Kaspersky has not stood still.
Avira may have, but is poised to bust a move.(Avira 10).

The bar may have been raised,(To our good),but the field placement of the contenders seems pretty close to business as usual.

In the dynamic test, Kaspersky 2010 and Symantec 2010 were tested. The latest version of both products. And Avast 5 beta was close to them.

Avast is not good FOR ME.

I have no use for AV which cuts 50% off from my internet speed.
I have no use for AV which does not work with Ad Muncher.

I recently switched to Avast! V5 from NOD32 V4.2, and there is no perceived slowing of internet speed with Avast!. If there is any, then NOD32 slowed the internet too, and the difference isn't noticeable. You can always disable Webshield, but I don't like crippling an AV to make it comfortable to use. :)

Yes, me too. Avast free and Shadow Defender. Very light on system resources.

I have VDSL2 connection, 60/30 Mbit/s (down/up). I get that speed with every other AV and suite than avast. With avast speed is 30/15.

Yes, I do not want to disable any features of avast, so I do not use it at all.

In my opinion I don't see why you would even want to install the Web shield. It is known that it is the cause of most of the slowdowns, and the Devs at Avast even said that. It has also been said several, several times that a Web shield like the one that Avast has can not be near as good as the browser based web shields such as AVG Linkscanner. I personally use NoScript and I can forget that Avast is even installed a lot of the times it is so light.

The fact is that Avast is by far the best free AV available, MSE is great too but it is young and has some problems and few features. Other than those two, Rising is the only other free AV I would consider.

i see the same thing from it about a 50% loss from the web shield. right now i use it turned off but the wife and daughter have it left on to be safer. i do hope in the next coming releases they work on this though

i tried the internet security trial for a week and found it slowed everything just a bit. on line games, internet and system start up. and made my event log look a bit of a mess.
i think it's got great potential i just hate anything thats slows my system even though it was only very slightly.
    also it's highly unconfigurable imho

I said that because this :
"it's just an average av sw, neither the paid version nor the free version is above average. it's just as ordinary & resource hog & bloated as avg is. many of the features presented w/ avast are needless. web shield, p2p shield, im shield, etc." doesnt reflect the reality , so it is just a opinion.

    I dont care anyway :D

I have Avast 5 with all the shields running on 3 different OS's (XP Home, Vista Home and Windows 7 64) and have not experienced any slowdowns at all. Avast has been the only AV that I have used with zero issues. I tried all the others and had slowdowns, definitions not updating, FP's etc etc etc. Just not with Avast. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. :D

I have been very pleasantly surprised (after reading of all the difficulties) with how easily the upgrade went from 4.8 to 5.0, and I'm impressed with how much better the new interface is. This is like a whole new product! I liked 4.8 a lot. I like 5.0 even more. :thumb:
