No issues with WU. Any error messages? What didn't install?

No problems on XP or Win7 64bit here.

Which operating system is causing you the problem?

If they install ok via safe mode with networking then perhaps it some kind of security software of system setup issue?

Does it give any error codes, any info in the event viewer?

I have encountered these errors frequently (although not on every update). One way to solve the problem, which has always worked for me, is described here:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/97775-update-error-80070643-a.html

    Alternatives:

    - Use the solution described in http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

    - Restore a backup image of the system partition (may not work if the image has the same problem).

    Good show, stapp!
I read in someone's sig (I think it was) the other day, that when their computer breaks, they let Wilders fix it.
Man, there is a lot of truth in that statement. :thumb:

I'm not having trouble installing the updates, but it seems that KB2691442 prevents me from executing any programs in W7 after restarting! When I try to open any program it gives a permissions error (I don't have the exact message, but re-installing it will reproduce it). Luckily I was able to remove the update, restart and things are back to normal.

    Any ideas?

'All's well that ends well' as the bard sayeth....

But, should an issue occur again and all else fails, or you wish to do .NET updates, then may I recommend manual download of the updates by visiting the M$ update site and installing off line.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/security.aspx?q=security update

I have to do that with my daughters 2nd hand laptop for some bizarre reason [yes tied the usual fixes], but off line works fine.

In fact I would not touch a .NET update other than off line from the downloaded .exe

    There's always hope.

Glad it's all sorted for you now djohn. I was merely passing on info that had helped someone else.

As has been said, we all try to help each other here :)

As regards the time taken to install the updates that some have mentioned, sometimes the Malicious Software Removal Tool scan can take quite a while and can look as thought the install of updates has frozen.

@ Mantra, Sorry I have kinda forgotten about this thread until today with the re-occuring issues of failed updates. How I fixed it was from the windows seven forum directions. right click on command prompt and run as admin and then copy and paste this. fsutil resource setautoreset true C: enter. This has resolved my issues two times now, but the question remains of whats causing it.

However,After doing some searching, I have found a hotfix windows readiness tool that checks for file data and registry inconsistencies that may prevent updates.I will not know if the hotfix works until next patch tuesday.
