I summon our fellow noble councillors to gather in the interest of an emergency meeting.

There have been objections of the inclusion of "None" as an option amongst names of products. In order to accommodate various suggestions which may improve future polls, a thread of discussion of this specific objection is held. As of now, you may give your voice to determine if the "None" option should stay, be removed or be treated in another certain manner. You, as the noble councillors, have no more and no less than 30 days to speak of your thoughts of this matter. I sincerely hope, that we can come up with a well balanced decision that will not be distinctively adverse for any of each of us all.

And with this, by the name of our beloved forum board, we shall begin our discussion.

Didn't vote as NONE isn't available.

The poll is about which one you use or may like to use? right? so i think the "None" option is irrelevant there, the poll is to inform about the preferred AV of people, if people don't use or like AVs, just don't vote. I personally use several OSes , some are strongly protected by security softs, others not at all, depending of what purposes they are destined for. I use Symantec Endpoint Protection on some machines so i voted for it.

I am quite sure that some people voted the None option because they want to say "hey i am so awesome and expert that i don't need any" and others because they use other kind of security softs (anti-exec/containment/virtualization) if the poll was "do you use an AV/security product?", then the None will be of course a legit option but surely less users will select it.

    Just my opinion.

IMO it's a legit option. That way we can see how many users don't use AV or rely on other security. Removing it would only give us less information and wouldn't benefit this poll.
I checked past polls and found option 'None' in all of them (since 2009). It's also interesting to see that percentage of those responding with 'None' has almost doubled from 2009/2010. It looks like members are starting to use alternate (AV-free) security setups more often. That's one info we would lost if we remove option 'None'.

Not necessarily. A poll can be used like a census to capture information about what people are currently doing, in which case all options must be allowed if the poll is to be representative. "None" is a perfectly valid option for many polls. It is up to the originator of the poll to decide which options are valid, depending on the purpose of the poll.

so a more precise option should be "No AV but other security softs"

I vote for not giving a rat's behind what happens to the "None" option.
But I simultaneously vote that Graf be commended for putting together one heck of an entertaining original post.

None option should be in this poll..." Do You Use an Antivirus?" But personally don't really care, but hey, you asked.

I think if we have no "none" option, then some people will write and post "none" instead. Wich would probably increase the amount of "none" posts compared to today when people can vote for "none" if they want to.

    The question should have been
"Do you use a Real-Time (i.e. Resident) AV?"...;)

Voted for keeping the "none" option. The poll is fine as it is.

Now while we are discussing it, any suggestion for on-demand scanners? Currently "None" also represents on-demand scanners which probably explains the considerably high numbers of votes.

It was a serious opener. Lol, I guess formality is not my kind of thing. :argh:

I think on-demand scanners should be part of "Other", while online services should be "None".

Considered about that before making the current poll, but I decided against it because I found that it's not fair for OD scanners to be compared with full-blown AVs. I wanted to create an option of "On-demand only", but wasn't sure of how people would react to that. :doubt:

Why? What about installed uploaders like VTUploader?

I was thinking since they haven't installed the product it's technically "None" on their system, but as for uploaders that complicates things. Might as well put both of those in "On-demand only" so "None" will have virtually no votes and people will stop complaining about it. :shifty:

There are at least two people who still will vote the "None" option, J_L. :D

    LOL Keep it!

Not that is matters. This poll will not make a difference regarding the use of None in product polls. It's really up to the poll creator. I very much doubt, regardless of the results that the use of None would be banned in product polls.

The use of None is applicable in some of these polls. For example, anti-virus or password manager, there are some folks who do not use them. Other does not apply. None is the only valid option.

As a friendly reminder this poll will expire in about one week. It is still possible if people want to turn the tables of the current results.

The way you say that makes it sound like you're emotionally invested in this whole thing. So maybe you're not being the most objective person regarding this.

I would think that most people voted "none" in those situations because it was the correct answer... given the choices.

I am being serious. If you see the current AV poll some members feel objected of the inclusion of "None" as a choice. Since I don't want that thread to become severely off-topic I made this so people can discuss about this objection, whether or not the majority of people want that particular option to stay or be removed, or if they have any better suggestions about what to do. You see, I allow everyone to express their thoughts so I can improve the quality of poll threads. I am open to all suggestions and I will do anything whatever the poll result decides, even if it againsts my own will. I am trying to respect other people by giving them a chance to give inputs, and yet everyone thinks I am arrogant and bully. >_>
