Some applications require .NET Framework to run properly and only in that case you need to install .NET Framework.
If you are asked to install it, it means you have such an application.
It's also usually mentioned in the system requirements of a software, that you have to install .NET Framework first in order to run this software.

I guess I'll need to download it to run the software that checks to see if my computer can run the vista beta software, but I hate to do it--on dialup it will take forever lol

Alot of users avoid to install .NET Framework, because it seems to require alot of space on your harddisk. But you can't avoid it, when it is needed. :)

P.S.: My original winXPproSP2 install CD contains also .NET Framework v1.1

If you are going to instal NET Framework 1.1, then do not forget to instal NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (security update). There is also 2.0, but some aplications, needs 1.1 runtime files. By the way, version 1.1 creates default account, which can be used by malware, you can remove it after instalation in Computer Management, it is not needed for running aplications.

    Hi Ron
I have decided against it--to many things to download and fool with--guess sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone, thanks for the link too--read all the stuff just now--definetly wont do it for sure now!

I totally agree. I've got the Office 2007 in its own FDISR snapshot and that works fine, but to the Vista beta I say Thanks for the offer, but no thanks.

.NET framework also adds another "user" into Windows, itself, which I was most displeased in.
It constantly accesses the net and for the two programs I have that require it, (paint.net and bitpim phone software) it's a waste of space and bandwidth.
I agree with Ronjor and if you can do without it, and not using it for 'creating' purposes you're better off.
Heck, it just creates yet another thing for MS to 'patch" and deal with.

Imho, it's unnecessary bloatware - I would not have it on my system, nor any app that requires it. :thumbd:
