what encryption algorithm does winrar use

    what encryption method does winrar use to password protect archives, is it a standard or propietary method and how secure is it compared to other methods (assuming it uses a standard algorithm). ?

    7-Zip is open source and does AES-256 bits.

    a good cross-platform solution is Truecrypt/Realcrypt
