Here I still boot from a floppy utilizing Ghost 2003 for imaging/cloning and am quite happy with it.

Came across the free app below that I don't think has been seen around here.May be of interest to some?

    Haven't tried it myself.

    Count me in that group.

A very long time PARAGON loyal, i still use a recovery CD from version 6 on many of my new installs although i have the latest one.

Works like a charm over here, has for many years now. You would have thought i found a bar of Gold when i accidently ran across PARAGON the first weeks i tried it.

I never looked back. That boot-corrector just recently resolved an issue for me one day after one of my drives was giving me problems. A real time saver for sure.

I keep P Drive BackUp Pro on constant standby now since i'm so infatuated with DriveSnapshot. I regularly use it to image/restore between partitions and it's perfect so far.

Never had much luck with Acronis or Ghost although i still have a mostly unused pristine Ghost 2003 Disk.

ShadowProtect is said to be all the rave these days but i'm satisfied with only 2, they don't return any errors or offer a hill to climb just to use them correctly.

One feature,of all the apps here discussed, that only Shadow protect has, is Hardware Independent Restore, absolutely priceless and brilliant:thumb:

Just installed a new motherboard which probably causes identification by Windows of a new different computer, not just a new mobo.

Was expecting the usual major drama in getting back into my C system drive, which initially happened, neverending BSODs.
Using the Recovery Disk, HIR is activated and asks which disk should be restored.

This is chosen from the Disk Map,so no errors about wrongly identified disks can happen.

The Restore takes about one minute-thats it - then straight into the old C drive.

    Only catch-drivers do need reinstalling!

    Hairy Coo,

I haven't used these features but TeraByte Unlimited has software for installing IDE Controller drivers and Mass storage drivers if you replace your motherboard with a different model, restore an old image and find that Windows doesn't boot. It's the TBOSDT software.

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery has Restore AnyWare.

First off, let me say that I mean no offense by this. Particularly as you didn't personally make up those numbers. Those sales figures, both for Acronis and for StorageCraft, are an absolute joke. Both of these companies are privately held, and neither of them share these sales figures with anyone outside the company (in fact they're very likely not shared with most of the individuals who ARE within these companies). Therefore there is absolutely no reliable way for an outsider to know the sales figures of these companies. That being said, if you did have accurate sales figures you should expect Acronis to have a far higher sales figure for two reasons:
    1) Acronis has been selling True Image for around 7 years, I believe, whereas StorageCraft's ShadowProtect line was introduced only 2 years ago.
    2) Acronis has spent many millions marketing their product.

    @Long View:

I'm not familiar with checkcal.exe. How is it that you estimated the number complaints for various products, on Wilders?

Sorry grnxnm - I must confess - my post was simply a poor attempt at humor in response to post #47 by Huupi

"If you quantify experiences with Acronis and SP,and compare the negative or positive ones, then what can i say more, its all too clear, further talk about these facts is totally unneccesary.

BTW quantifying is IMO the most reasonable approach in comparing the different softwares"

quantifying might be the most reasonable approach if we had accurate data - which we don't -- so I just made up a few figures ( which is what many do all the time).

Both programs are fine as far as I'm concerned. Neither have given me any problems. Both programs have large numbers of people complaining that they don't work. I think all that any user can do is try them out and use the one that works best for that particular user - so for me quantifying is of little value. Sorry.

again I'm sorry - just part of the same joke. checkcal.exe sounded like it might be real. If the negative posts for any product were taken too seriously I doubt if it would be possible to buy any new software. Reading the complaints post for any product usually gives a false impression. Even if checkcal.exe did exist I doubt if the output would actually help a prospective purchaser.

Hi, Long View,no joking though but as its clear from my earlier posts,i'm not in favor or against these softwares,i was simply summing up my reading of the many experiences with these softwares here on Wilders and else,so i can't deny the facts that Shadow Protect at least to my eyes is much more stable, has lesser complaints, has more support for drivers and has faster recovery/imaging times and their HIR option seem to work flawless.

Again if it seems that i'm favoring SP,its not the case,it simply the sum total(quantify !!) of all these experiences as you can verify yourself. And anyone with sound senses will come to the same conclusion.Sorry. ;)

Huupi - If I had to choose between Acronis and SP ( the others I have seen are not worth considering in my view) the I would vote for SP.

I still maintain that in some circumstances Acronis is just as good as SP and does have the advantage of not having an activation procedure.

Both have worked flawlessly for me and I keep images using both - just in case.

My point about the numbers was simply to say that it is the experience of each user that matters to that user i.e the experiences of others , especially regarding features not used are of less importance.

I haven't said anything in this thread, as I doubt there is anyone who doesn't know I am SP all the way. That is based on results.

But that being said, let me add this about Acronis. I've used it thru Version 9 and I never had a failed install. I suspect that many of the problems people have with Acronis's latest versions stem from first trying to work with some of the bloatware features, and 2nd total inexperience.

My main complaint with Acronis is some what I would consider silly bloat features. For example being to back up just E-Mail. I just image the whole system, it's quick. In fact yes my E-mail is very important, so I use SP's continous incrementals and take them every 30 minutes, with no impact on my system.

I agree, ofcourse i do,personal experience is the deciding factor, but the strength of a product is not only decided by that, another way to look at is how many satisfied users are there as compared to the whole group of users. This goes way beyond personal opinions and is a better way in determining the worth of a product.

I believe that the real strength lies in his applicability to many different configurations without much problems, and in this way you may say something about Acronis versus Shadow Protect if you read all the posts on the subject !;)

No prob. I was actually rather interested in checkcal.exe. I wanted to know where that app was getting its figures. Something like that could be interesting to play with.

But like others (and you) have said, people really need to try these different apps out on their own rigs. The "best alternative" is the one that works best on YOUR machine, and sometimes that best alternative doesn't cost a penny. All depends on your requirements, budget, etc. This topic seems to come up every couple of months and it always boils down to the recommendation to "go try out this list of products and pick the one that works best for you."

I just downloaded my copy of Paragon Drive Backup. Now, what's the best way to rid my system completely of Acronis? It can't possibly be a simple matter of running the uninstall feature. Am I right?

    Thanks,

    ~Dave
