The number of .uk domains suspended for criminal activity doubled over the past year, as cyber-criminals continued to target users with malicious content and phishing.

Nominet, the official registry for the TLD, revealed figures on Tuesday claiming the number surged from 16,632 last year to 32,813 during the period November 1 2017 to October 31 2018.
The number of dodgy domains has doubled over the past three years, although the overall percentage of those suspended remains low, rising from 0.08% in 2016 to just 0.27% today.

However, the efforts of law enforcers and researchers to investigate malicious domains has been severely impeded by the GDPR, which frequently prohibits access to the WHOIS database of registrants.

The number of .uk web domains suspended for criminal activity fell to 28,937 from 32,813 in the 12 months to October 2019, according to the UK’s national domain name system (DNS) operator, Nominet, the first recorded fall in five years.

Nominet CEO Russell Haworth said this was evidence that the organisation’s closer collaboration with law enforcement bodies was having a demonstrable impact on the ability of criminals to operate online.

“We will not tolerate .uk domains being used for criminal activity,” said Haworth. “Suspensions have fallen for the first time since 2014, indicating that using collective established processes combined with technology-driven interventions is, it seems, acting as a deterrent.”

Nominet, the UK’s domain name registrar, suspended a total of 22,158 .uk internet domains for criminal activity in the 12 months from 1 November 2019 to 31 October 2020, down almost 7,000 on the previous year, and with less impact from the Covid-19 pandemic than might have been expected, given its domination of the 2020 security landscape.

The organisation, which acts to suspend domains following notifications from law enforcement when they are being used for criminal activity, and puts on hold domains at registration if potential criminal activity is suspected, said the suspensions represented about 0.22% of the total .uk internet domains currently registered.

Nominet CEO Russell Haworth said the drop in suspensions was clearly driven by fewer Pipcu referrals.

“This suggests that their work to stop counterfeit goods reaching .uk domains is having an effect,” he said.
“Criminal groups are also starting to realise .uk domains used for scams will be suspended promptly. While that is good news, we remain focused on playing our part to take swift action when alerted to any criminality in the namespace.”
