I just saw the new version today. I thought that maybe someone else had announced its release in this forum. So I searched all of the Thread Titles and the latest VLC Media Player Thread and could find no mention of version 2.0.8.

One thing to watch for in 2.0.8: there seems to be a glitch in the installer version I used (from Videolan) which, when auto-uninstalling the older version before installing the new one, doesn't properly save existing settings and preferences. During installation, all my audio and video formats somehow got re-associated with Win Media Player; I'd formerly had everything except MID (which VLC can't handle without add-ons) associated with VLC. And in 2.0.8 you can only associate file extensions, not media types, which would have taken forever if I'd tried to edit manually.

Fortunately my son googled the problem and was able to find an excellent .reg script which fixed the associations nicely. Obviously others had run into this same problem.

Odd that when I check 2.0.7 it says I have the latest version?

2.0.4 update checker just says failed when checking, and I suspect if I install over it, it will lose settings etc.

I always install over the previous version and have never lost my settings. Just make sure that when the new installer begin uninstalling the old version, you uncheck the delete setting and preferences box. Then when the new installer starts installing, during the install options, scroll down and make sure the delete settings and preferences box is unchecked over there too. Thats it you will not lose any VLC customized settings.
