UNIX is difficult, right? Maybe. Still, now and then, you ought to test some of the non-Linux alternatives out there, just to get a feel. Here's a nice review of VirtualBSD, a FreeBSD VMware virtual appliance used as a technology demonstrator, with pleasing looks, lots of good programs, multimedia functionality out of the box, and more. If you thought badly of Linux cousins, perhaps this article will sober you up. Have fun.

    Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

BSD!, I always have had a soft spot for BSD, it's concept is so clean: drivers in /boot/loader.conf, services in /etc/rc.conf, X-windows in /etc/ttys. System files in /usr and application files in /usr/local. There is even /usr/local/etc for non-system services.
And application configuration settings in /etc/make.conf

Recently I installed FreeBSD 8.2 on my music server, I was shocked about how nice it's Open Sound System sounds.
And I also notice that my ssh sessions are so much more responsive than Debian was. Actually, the whole system seems more responsive!
    FreeBSD is a production beast.

Application installation is as easy as Debian's deb packages.
    It's documentation is superb: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/

Hardware support probably doesn't compete with linux, but BSD is sure a fine *nix!
