When I use Smart Backup to back up to an external HD it takes between 15 and 20 minutes to complete its work. Can I continue to use the computer during that time or should I wait until the backup completes?

You can use the computer while the backup is in process.

I also use the computer and there should be no problem in doing so. However, just to be a little cautious I won't copy a bunch of folders around or do other intensive disk activity. No sense tempting fate!

Since I only do manual full images of my system when I think it is a good idea I often just start the process before a meal or other non-computer activity so it runs when I'm doing something else.

Thanks to all who replied. Because of your help I now have the warm fuzzies about backing up and using the computer.
