USB Promoter Group Announces USB4 Version 2.0 with up to 80Gbps transfer rate

USB Promoter Group has finally announced (pdf) USB4 Version 2.0. Although the naming hints that it is just a second-gen update to USB4, it supports double the transfer speeds of its predecessor, with up to 80Gbps.

The new standard will be backwards compatible with USB4 version 1.0, SB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3, but not with USB 1.0 and Thunderbolt 4. The USB4 2.0 specifications will be updated for USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) as well.

Key characteristics of the updated USB4 solution include:

Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables.

Updates to data and display protocols to better use the increase in available bandwidth.

USB data architecture updates now enable USB 3.2 data tunneling to exceed 20 Gbps.

Updated to align with the latest versions of the DisplayPort and PCIe specifications.

Backward compatibility with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.

USB4 version 2.0 will debut in devices later this year.

release of the USB4® Version 2.0 specification, a major update to enable up to 80 Gbps of data
performance over the USB Type-C® cable and connector. The USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB

And the next standard for the popular reversible connector type will further the twisted plot that is USB naming with a new, perplexing identity: USB4 Version 2.0.
USB4 Version 2.0 will operate at up to 80Gbps, the USB Promoter Group announced today.

The new type of USB4 will continue the USB-IF's questionable naming scheme that only its members and a thumbtack-and-string-covered corkboard can truly appreciate. When it's all said and done, it seems you'll be able to find USB-C ports that are USB4 Version 2.0, USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, or USB 2.0, plus some will opt for Intel Thunderbolt certification. And in the case of USB4 Version 1.0, you'll still need more information to know if the port supports the spec's max potential speed of 40Gbps.

Leveraging Intel's Thunderbolt protocol for the first time, USB4 introduced protocol tunneling to the USB specification. With data and display data protocol updates, USB4 Version 2.0 will leverage the higher bandwidth for "higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort, and PCI Express data tunneling to best use the higher available bandwidth," according to the USB Promoter Group's announcement. USB 3.2 data tunneling will reportedly surpass the spec's max data-transfer rate of 20Gbps.

USB4 v2.0 Specification Published For Doubling The Performance

The USB Implementers Forum on Tuesday announced the USB4 v2.0 specification that allows USB transfer speeds up to 80 Gbps over USB Type-C connections.

The USB-IF announced the USB4 Version 2.0 specification for doubling the maximum aggregate bandwidth of USB while leveraging PAM3 signaling and allowing the use of existing 40 Gbps Type-C passive cables while also introducing new 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables. Alternatively, the updated spec allows the configuration of up to 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps for the other direction, such as for high-end displays and other configurations not needing equal bandwidth.

USB4 Version 2.0 retains compatibility with existing USB versions. USB4 Version 2.0 also makes other changes as outlined in the press release.
