If your TI version is 8, 9 or 10, the boot CD should see the usb drive if you choose Full version, not Safe.

As Ralphie said, you must choose the Full version. Also, the USB drive must be connected and powered on before you start booting from the Recovery CD. Once TrueImage has booted, it will not see a newly attached or powered on drive.

I can confirm this problem for Version 9 (I have not been able to upgrade yet). I am trying to migrate to a larger hard drive in my Dell Inspiron E1505 notebook and just can't do it. I start up with the "full" version, and not only does it not see my USB HD, it doesn't see my DVD drive. I am stymied.

I have the same problem. I too can confirm that I am using the Full version from the Recovery CD. This is very annoying as I bought TI and the ext usb drive to do just this.

A thought. Does the external drive need to have its own power supply and need to be 'powered up' for TI to recognise the drive from the boot CD? I certainly hope not. I'm using the LaCie 120GB powered from the USB2 port.

Would appreciate a reply from Acronis Support.

My experience is that with the computer running under Windows and the external already powered up (if applicable), the external HD, after being plugged in a USB port, will take some (model dependant) time to initialize before it shows up in My Computer. (One of my externals won't even start to spin on power alone - it has to also be USB connected to spin up.)

The initialization time noted in Windows is the time I wait on the selection screen when booted from the Rescue CD (before clicking on Full) for the external to get ready before Linux and True Image start to load. For me that helps.

Anyway, from what I have seen, the showing up of an external drive (even in Windows, more so in the rescue environment) appears to be some sort of a hit or miss occurrence.

Using the rescue CD, are you able to press F11 and get to the quiet... prompt?

It might be that the APCI=NOAPIC may solve the problem.

The acpi=off noapic parameters didn't work for me.
