Made in Oregon notifies 7,800 customers of possible data breach

Made in Oregon says that thousands of online customers may have had their personal and credit card information stolen during a data breach earlier this year.

The Portland-based gift retailer sent letters last week to 7,800 customers who purchased items online between February and August informing them that their data may have been compromised. The company said in the letter that customers’ names, billing addresses, shipping addresses, email addresses and credit card information may have been compromised.

The data breach was limited to customers who made online purchases. Customers who placed orders over the phone and those who made in-store purchases were not affected, said company owner Verne Naito.

Made in Oregon is aware of a small number of customers whose credit cards have been used fraudulently, according to Naito.
“We think the actual number of people who had their cards used fraudulently was very, very small," Naito said.

Information including names, billing addresses, email addresses, and credit card details entered through the site was potentially accessed.
In a breach notification to consumers that was also posted on the Vermont Attorney General’s Office website, the company said it wasn’t aware of any other information being accessed.

Online gift shop ‘Made in Oregon’ was infected with card skimmers since September 2020.

The platform is now sending out notices of the breach, informing customers of a credit card data leak.

Clients who bought anything from the shop are advised to take the offer for one year of Experian protection services.

‘Made in Oregon,’ the Portland-based online gift retailer that operates on the “madeinoregon.com” domain, has disclosed a massive security breach that involves highly sensitive data of its customers. More specifically, “magecart” actors have planted a data skimmer on its website and siphoned everything that customers entered on the order forms between the first week of September 2020 and the last week of March 2021.
