I'm (finally) seriously considering to upgrade my notebook from Win7 to Win10. The only thing that's kept me from doing this ever since Win10 was released was the fear of having to re-install my apps! Can I perform a clean in-place Win10 upgrade that preserves my apps? ...if so, how do I determine which Win10 Edition is best for me?
Cruise, The upgrade leaves your apps installed. Amazing. Make a Win10 UFD. In Win7 plug in the UFD, double click setup.exe and follow the simple instructions. Depending on your hardware it can take 20 minutes to a few hours. You might need at least 30 GB of Free Space in your Win7 partition. But create a Win7 image before you start. Just in case.
Brian, that's good news and I have plenty of room on C: (my Win7 partition) - but I have a few more questions... - Will the upgrade leave Win7 on C:? - Which Win10 edition do you suggest I use? - After the upgrade should I expect to take a performance hit?
Win10 will have the C: drive letter. If your Win7 is Home you need Win10 Home. etc If your Win7 is 32-bit you need Win10 32-bit. etc If your Win7 is not International English, don't get Win10 International English. Performance hit, I don't know. It depends on your hardware. It could perform better. I get the ISO from here... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO But you have to open the page in a Linux OS. If you don't have Linux then use the Download Tool to make a UFD. After the upgrade there will be many GB in the C: drive to clean up. Let's discuss that later. How much data is in your C: drive? What is the size of the C: drive partition? If you don't like Win10 (say performance reason) you can restore your Win7 image. Edit.... You might have left it too late to get your Win10 activated.
Brian, not too long ago I posted this for you. Btw, I currently have a licensed copy of Win7 SP1 x64 (US) installed.
That's my concern. The free upgrade from Win7 finished 18 months ago. 2 months ago for the Assistive Technologies upgrade.
While in theory the free upgrade period actually finally ended on the 16th of January, it seems you can still upgrade for free. As seen in the following link. https://www.nextofwindows.com/upgrading-from-windows-7-to-windows-10-is-still-free-in-2018 Also in this threat at CNET, people have posted that they were able to do the free upgrade after the 16th. https://www.cnet.com/forums/discuss...-i-can-still-get-windows-10-upgrade-for-free/
Since I'm running Win7 SP1 Home Premium, it's only possible to upgrade to Win10 Home - is that correct?
@Brian K, @roger_m - the Win10 free upgrade is still valid. I just completed a direct online upgrade which went smoothly and Win10 s up and running. I was surprised that it didn't even ask me for my Win7 product key! I do have a few followup questions... - As I made a couple of backup images before upgrading I really don't need the Windows Old folder or any other unnecessary 'baggage' on C:, so how do you suggest I clean all of that up and the disk space? - How do I get rid of the desktop's Start tiles? - I don't see much use for them and don't care for the look. - Any other suggestions for a Win10 noob would be appreciated.
Cruise, That's great news you can still upgrade for free. Right click C: drive, Properties "Disk Clean-up" put a tick in everything and click Clean up system files, put a tick in everything again OK, Delete Files, etc To remove a tile right click it, Unpin from Start. In the Start Menu full list there are a lot of games you can right click, Uninstall Disable Fast Startup Disable Hibernation if you don't use it Disable System Restore if you don't use it
