Update Accepts Blank Username/Password

    I first entered my username/password and successfully updated definitions file.
    I then blanked both fields. Program returned message 'Virus signature database is up to date.'

    As far as I can remember this happen on NOD32 also . If the signatures are not very old and the programs only checks (without downloading/updating) , no problem . If it finds your computer needs updating (download new signatures) then it will require username/passoword

    No, because access to the file with information about the current update is not password protected.
