I'm part of the target audience for all those "Computer XYZ for Dummies" books, so naturally I haven't got a clue how to solve a nagging but harmless problem.
I'm on dialup with win98, and a few minutes after having started my PC (off-line mode) a window pops up by itself and invites me to go onto the internet. It loooks identical to the IE startup window, except the "Work off-line" button is called "Cancel". I never use it, of course as I suspect it belongs to something nasty.
Can someone pls tell me how to get rid of this little pesky thing.
    Thanks,
    / H

Hi Hans 01, and welcome to Wilders.

I have moved your post from the General Topics forum and into this forum where it will get the right attention.

Please follow the instructions HERE for downloading and installing Spybot S&D and/or Ad-Aware, and HijackThis.

Once you have downloaded HijackThis, create a new, permanent folder on your C drive and unzip Hijackthis.exe into the new folder. Run the program, then when the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will then change to a "Save Log" button. Press the "Save Log" button. Copy and paste it's contents here in this thread. NOTE: Most of what it lists will be harmless and even essential - so, do NOT fix anything yet. Someone will review your log and give you instructions on what needs to be fixed.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi Hans 01,

Well RapidBlaster is all I can find. This may be a remnant of a previous infection.

Check the item listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rb32 ml075e] "c:\program files\RapidBlaster\rb32.exe"

Then run RapidBlaster-Killer once more, just in case we woke it up and reboot.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Hi, I followed your instructions, see new log below. The bad news = the unwanted pop-up window is still with me. Any other possibilities?

When you rightclick that popup can you get the Properties of it?
Maybe that will put us on track.

OK, will do. In the meantime - sometimes the PC won't shut down after 'Start\shutdown" commands. Ctrl + Alt + Delete brings up a small window where some activities can be listed as "not responding". In the case of shutdown refusal, there are 2 entries. When I delete them, my PC shuts down. The files are
    Pccguide
    Rundll32

Pccguide belongs to your Anitivirusprogram, but the rundll32 is a Windows file.

Updating IE6 to at least SP1 might solve that problem.

Rightclick didn't do anything - don't ask me why. However, I checked all settings under the "Advanced" tab. They are 100% identical to the normal internet connect pop-up window. Now I'm really confused.
Is SP1 a later version of IE6, and how do I upgrade to it? I'm a bit hesitant to go to MSN, as the last time I downloaded one of their products my internet settings were changed (MSN as default) and it was no longer possible to change. A local IT expert advised how to fix (and gave the tip to this forum). He called it "page-jacking".
    Regards,
