UnThreat Antivirus Free Edition 2012

GFI may not even know yet. UnThreat AV has only been freeware for 1-2 days.

 

Update just reinstalled and no longer does the GUI open on boot up. Just a heads up on Access was not checked by default.

 

Still no slowdowns with the product?

 

Nope.Runs great. 34K + 70K=104K of memory during a full scan!

The bad thing:Anyone can easily kill all UnThreat related processes from the task manager.Too bad, actually.

 

This program is decent, but I feel there a better free alternatives at this point. While the signatures are strong, some zero-day stuff will get through. Also, the memory usages needs to be trimmed down a bit.

 

The behaviour blocker i.e suspicious behaviour setting in advanced needs work. I test with quite a good amount of malware but no detection from this. And yes its disabled by default, you have to enable it manually.

The signature detection seems quite good.

Right click doesn't shows scan with unthreat? Do you guys have the same thing?
GUI has the option to customize shell context scan but its not there in the right click?

Anyone know how many times it updates in a day?

I think the VPN adapter should not be there in the free version if VPN functionality is only available for paid users.

Edit - Checked few malware not detected by Unthreat with VirusTotal. Those malware were not detected by Unthreat here but detected by Vipre at VT. If it uses Vipre engine those malware should also be detected by Unthreat, right? Maybe Unthreat not detected those malware coz of less frequency of updates or they are providing limited database.

 

but Lavasoft free IS uses Vipre engine for a long time...

Bugs:
1. Manual Update not working
2. Context Menu absent.

 

Yesterday I installed it. Today when I opened the GUI about section it was automatically checking for updates & few secs later mentioned no new updates available. I hope it is not a database limited AV.

I have reported it to their support team and got a positive reply.

 

But Lavasoft Free lacks alot of things that are needed..

 

hmm I know... Like on-access scan and system impact.

Nothing special; they said that they will forward this to their tech team.
But the good thing is that they have replied within two hours even in weekend.

 

The software contains open candy.



Single file deletion from quarantine option is not working.

There is no settings to ask the user about taking actions on detected file.

 

After 2 days of installation still the database is same. It automatically checks & mentions no new updates available.

Sam happened here. But is this a bug that it is not showing correct database version or its not getting updates?

3 days without updates. Uninstalled it. But the signature detection seems good. Promising if updates frequency will be good.

I sent an email to Unthreat team regarding AV updates, database & engine in the free & paid version.

Here is the reply I got.

"There is automatic update in the paid version but not in the free one. We are about to release a new version of the Free version with a button for offline update.
The databases are the same but you will have to do manual updates on the free version."

They replied that it will increase the server load for now. They will look into this in the future releases of the free version.

By the way people here have mentioned that it uses Vipre engine.

But during my test with Unthreat I found that whatever Unthreat miss Vipre detects quite a few of those malware, why so if Unthreat also uses Vipre?
