Unable to open registry key 'CriticalDeviceDatabase'." During Universal Restore

    I just got Echo Workstation with Universal Restore and wanted to test it out to see if I could restore an image to my hard drive in another computer with different hardware and make it work. I happened to have a drive with an image already restored on it from my usual computer. So first I put that drive in another computer and, lo and behold, it worked as it was. Apparently, a drive based on my usual hardware works on this other computer as is.

    Nonetheless, I wanted to see how the Universal Restore process worked. So I used the boot disc and allowed it to clear the drive partition and restore a new image to it. The computer I was trying to restore it in is a Dell Dimension 8250. So I had gone to their site and had a folder with the IDE Drivers and I told Echo it could look in there during the restore if necessary.

    So I left for an hour or two and when I come back it said the operation has succeeded with errors.

    The error in the log, repeated multiple times, says:

    Now I don't know what "Unable to open registry key 'CriticalDeviceDatabase'." means or if it's important. After the restore, the drive booted fine, but this doesn't tell me much since, as I said, the drive with a restored image on it booted fine even before without using Universal Restore at all. Unfortunately, this turned out not to be a good test case because for some reason this hardware apparently is compatible with my drive setup as it is and able to boot. I really don't want to have to go find another computer to test this out right now.

    I just want to know if this CriticalDeviceDatabase error is worth worrying about. Or would it likely have booted anyway even on another computer with incompatible hardware?

    Thank you for using Acronis Corporate Products

    Could you please do the following?

    Please go to Start -> Run -> type regedit

    Find the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\

    Make right-click on it -> Permissions. Set Full control for the user under which you use the program.

    Re-create the backup image and restore it once again. This error should disappear.

    Ok I changed it to full control for the user under which I use Echo Workstation to create the images. This is what you meant right? I did the restore from the bootable CD on another machine. So I assume you mean full control for the user on which I do the backups.

    So I did this.

    Testing the restore on another computer with different hardware took some work for me. If that was the only error I got (you saw the log I posted) and it worked fine after the restore, should I be pretty sure it's fine? That error isn't anything critical right?

    Hello Marpost,

    Thank you for using Acronis True Image Echo Workstation

    The CriticalDeviceDatabase subkey stores the critical device database. This database stores configuration data for new devices that must be installed and started before the Windows components that normally install devices are started.

    If the restored system boot normally there is nothing to worry about.
