    not sure about reload and menu - yes, stay open. but true seems that ublock/uMatrix reload behave different from ctrl+f5 - same for the logger and reload. u-reload is faster than ctrl+f5 but slower than f5.

    It seems Raymond puts a lot more time into devloping uBlock Origin than uMatrix, although I find uMatrix to be the easier one to understand and use.

    Anyone know if Raymond uses just uBlock Origin for his own personal browsing? Or does he use both?

    i have both installed. ofc uMatrix makes it easier to handle certain content but it is not superset to ublock. it refines blocking content in special for popups, plugins and other content (like video or audio), not more. concerning flash i am not sure if ublock can handle it also using the logger and creating a static filter.

    uMatrix does more than popups, plugins and video/audio. It makes it a lot easier to understand and control scripting, cookies, and even tracking images than uBlock.

    As a web content blocker uMatrix is certainly more powerful. I don't use it on my daily surfing, it being disabled most of the times. I can sure understand uBO is much more popular and it being a competitor to other blockers. So the main development interest to it.

    That too that the matrix makes things easier to understand, it is a brilliant interface. Just as I mentioned on day to day browsing, we can't use the uM as convenient as uBO. To think that our browsing needs always as protected or that we can with such tools have more privacy is a bit futile.

    I like uBO interface too, it took a bit longer to learn. The reason was just my reluctance I guess.

    I am not sure the "wikis" have mentioned how to allow the extensions/addons to have the rules/settings saved in a Sandboxied browser. I think not. I managed to do so, but in case I had to look again how to, would be great if some knowledge spreading person would put it in the wikis.

    ok, forgot the cookies. but tracking images are ads not that type of content umatrix was intended for. idd it can block tracking images because it uses the same hosts file filter list, thats why it is recommend to use that filter list either in ublock or umatrix - but not both. for easier use i disabled it in ublock.

    Ah, no. Tracking images are not always ads. There are beacons etc that are embedded in images solely for tracking, nothing to do with ads.

    activate the hosts list and tracking is gone - that is the same ATS list from here http://www.hosts-file.net/
    ATS is only for that purpose and updated daily. ofc you can add more lists from that site: fake, rogues, spy, pharma aso.
    ublock checks on double entries and sort them out.

    i started opera and vivaldi last days and installed (only) ublock origin with my settings from firefox - working like charm.

    I have a question about all of this but I have a site that knows I am using umatrix so it becomes a broken site. Now why is it that the site remains broken until I remove the entire Chrome directory and let chrome rebuild it? I have tried allow all and I have used the temp turn on and off button (which should just make it get out of the way) AND I have even uninstalled the plugin but once the site is broken it is broken until I start fresh.

    Without telling us what site exactly is affected and what exactly you've done with uMatrix nobody will be able to reproduce and help you. Sorry!

    please no unnecessary full quotes. ty

    broken until chrome restart? thats odd and i would say not caused by uMatrix. any other filter installed? umatrix alone is not regular, in most setups its combined with another filter.

    changes in uMatrix (and also uBlock) and the instant reload from the matrix dialog (or normal reload or ctrl+F5) should fix immediately.

    How do I get uMatrix to behave in soft allowing mode by default?

    Toggle the "all" cell to green while the global scope is selected, and optionally remove the block rule from the "frame" cell.

    Done manually, you can add:

    * * * allow

    And optionally remove:

    * * frame block

    Gorhill, thanks.

    Got it going manually. But to clarify to select the global scope, is that selecting the * where normally the webpage is mentioned (just found out it's clickable)?
    I'm guessing so? Some of this program's functionality is quite unobvious. So the single * represents the global scope in the grid but at the manual rules level it is represented by * * * ?
    Also took me a wile to figure out how to get to the dashboard quickly who knew you have to click the program name something that isn't usually clickable.
    Btw, is there a way to block specific scripts? Getting so sick of those cookie notifications (and other stuff) all over the web that keep showing up especially if you don't keep cookies around for long.

    @Brummelchen
    I actually got to the websites you're linking to before ever posting. Spend quite some time figuring out some (basic) stuff about this program. Even though I wasn't looking to become a power user just to block certain things at certain times. Eventually got rather frustrated not being able to do basic things with ease. That's where the sign up for the forum came from (hate having to register, especially as it usually comes with this annoying confirmation email step).

    The sentence "The top-most left-most cell is the currently selected scope." Threw me off / didn't register with me as it isn't exactly part of the grid/matrix. I got to the all cell following that sentence.

    sorry but i can not foresee what you have read in the past - you have to tell us or get along with such answers.
    umatrix is more granular than ublock - for firefox i use both, for opera only ublock. umatrix is not easy and sometimes its overkill, i dont want to screw two settings in opera.

    when site specifi ublock or umatrix can do.
    umatrix can also block per sub-domain.
    uBlock can block inline or 3rd-party, separated, but not per sub-domain
    ublock can block by content, umatrix cant (i think so).

    It wasn't about relying on others to have a crystal ball but I just wanted to make clear that I didn't just thew up this question right out of the gate but more in the sense of a last resort.
    Anyway, it seems like I should be using uMatrix and uBlock kinda mixed. The element picker mode of uBlock seems to work reasonably effectively to block cookie popups and such, didn't really see ublock as anything more than an ad blocker.

    Btw I noticed since I installed uBlock and uMatrix that the notification thingy on Youtube isn't working great, it often hangs and keeps loading indefinitely. I'm getting quite inconsistent results turning uBlock and uMatrix off/on so it could be a youtube / browser itself issue, it seems to work fine in IE (I'm primarily on Pale Moon). You ore anybody else didn't happen to notice that as well?

    (this is waht happens, couldn't get a thumbnail working, spam protection or something, result weird double link, can't get rid of the first link)

    ublock is an ad and script blocker (adblock + noscript), also ublock can replace ghostery (hosts files), disconnect (disconnect list), better privacy, privacy badger and some more (>12 altogether)

    for beginners ublock is sufficient, umatrix is more granular in content, some need to work it out himself to understand.

    best way when using both to have ublock less blocking script and comtent (only ads) and let umatrix block scripts and more.
    overlap is not recommended - thats why raymond advise to turn hosts file options in ublock off when using same list in umatrix.

    concerning your picture - which website?

    Guess I was to much focused on uMatrix and to little on uBlock. uBlock will probably suffice.

    The youtube notification icon seems to be related to having uMatrix and Disconnect running at the same time. Didn't realize uBlock could replace Disconnect / Ghostery, going to give that a try. Should I do anything special to get uBlock to block the same stuff as Disconnect / Ghostery?

    Is there a way to block third-party domains in uMatrix (not one by one)? I'm experiencing with this rule and wouldn't want to constantly open uBlock Origin.

    uMatrix blocks 3rd party by default install settings. It has no allow rules, only noop rules, relating to uBlock terminology that is. It is a much stricter blocker than uBlock. It might be too much for you if host files block something important needed to allow.

    Creating global rules is also much more difficult. It is your choice if you really need all that power uMatrix offers. I use in my day to day surfing just uBlock on Firefox. With Chrome them both.

    you need to switch to global scope via its toolbar panel's top leftmost cell where domains are displayed.

    I see, but CSS and images are allowed globally by default:

    That was almost self-evident, I don't know how I didn't understand at first.

    I'm aware of that, thanks.
