Nearly 2.5 million homes and businesses in the UK, approximately 8% of the total, can now access a full-fibre broadband service, according to the latest rolling update to Ofcom’s Connected Nations report, with 400,000 properties passed by the various ongoing broadband roll-outs in the first five months of 2019.

Based on the data, which was captured in May, Ofcom said that full-fibre – also known as fibre-to-the-premises or FTTP – broadband was now being rolled out at its fastest ever rate, with around a million properties passed in the space of 12 months.

“We expect availability of full-fibre to continue to grow over the coming years, as existing measures from Ofcom and government continue to have effect, new initiatives come into force and companies build on their deployments so far.”

It is being offered at the start of a national rollout of gigabit broadband by Virgin Media, which has pledged to cover 15 million homes by 2021.
The upgrade still involves the use of a type of copper-based cable.

The company claims it would offer speeds 20 times the current UK average. Downloading a high definition film of 5GB would take about 42 seconds, compared to 13 minutes with the current UK average download speed.
At present, BT's Openreach division, Virgin Media and smaller players including Hyperoptic, Gigaclear and Cityfibre are installing fibre to the premises (FTTP) networks which allows even faster speeds. BT Openreach is on target to deliver full fibre to around 15 million homes by 2025.

£5bn for full fibre - do the numbers add up?

Three months ago, Boris Johnson set a hugely ambitious target - giving every home in the UK full-fibre broadband by 2025. Now, at the Conservative Party conference, the Chancellor, Sajid Javid, has promised the funds to make that happen.

So, the chancellor appears to be expecting to get a lot out of the £5bn, assuming he really is sticking to the promise of full-fibre for all - a much faster more extensive programme to bring the best possible broadband to everyone, without dipping deeper into public funds.
Watering down?
There is one more puzzling thing about the chancellor's speech - does it contain a watering down of the prime minister's full-fibre pledge?
And Mr Javid's team is not providing much more clarity, except to say "gigabit-capable" broadband networks will be provided to everyone and further details will be set out later this year in the National Infrastructure Strategy.

Instead, ministers are now seeking to roll out "gigabit-capable" speeds and have not given a specific end date.

Individual companies also questioned whether it really made sense to guarantee an optical cable connection to each home when other alternatives were available that could deliver gigabit-plus speeds at lower costs.
O2's chief executive called the idea of digging up land and laying down cables to even the remotest of homes "just nonsensical" when the last leg of such connections could be provided wirelessly via 5G at lower cost.

Ofcom has announced several new proposals which will see the UK’s broadband infrastructure get an upgrade to full-fibre and obsolete the old copper network. The plans are currently in the consultation phase and the final decisions will be published in early 2021.

In order to introduce full-fibre to the whole of the UK, Ofcom said the £5 billion investment to connect rural areas being offered by the government will be accompanied by Ofcom’s plan to “vary [its] regulation for different parts of the country.”

The UK government has announced more than £22m of additional funding into its broadband voucher scheme.

The news comes mere weeks after more than three million homes and businesses in rural areas of the UK were given the opportunity to get gigabit-ready, full-fibre broadband over the coming years, and follows on from rural provider Gigaclear’s employment of more full-time field engineers to increase its build capacity.
The investment is designed to subsidise the cost of building gigabit-capable broadband networks to so-called hard-to-reach areas in the UK.

BTW, just to be clear, if you plug your laptop, desktop or smart TV into this socket you have a direct connection to the internet? Would be cool if they implemented this in newly built homes in the future, but I'm not counting on it, see screenshot.

BTW, I totally forgot about Powerline adapters. This would be a good solution to connect devices without having to use WIFI, I have heard positive things about them.

Scaled back plans for faster broadband speeds across the UK will come as “a blow to rural communities”, internet providers have said following Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Spending Review.

Full-fibre and gigabit-capable broadband to every home and business across the UK by 2025 was a key Conservative manifesto pledge in the 2019 general election, which brought the goal forward by eight years.
But now the target is for “a minimum of 85% gigabit capable coverage by 2025”.

According to the National Infrastructure Strategy publication, the Government will “seek to accelerate roll-out further to get as close to 100% as possible”.

The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) wants clarity on how the £5 billion budget to support deployment will be allocated, after the Chancellor only committed to £1.2 billion in Wednesday’s spending review.

“Today’s announcement scaling back the Government’s ambitions for supporting broadband rollout in the hardest to reach areas and is a blow to rural communities,” said Andrew Glover, ISPA chairman.
Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at comparison site cable.co.uk said 100% was always “extremely wishful thinking” and described 85% as “still shooting for the moon”.

“If achieved you can be sure that the remaining 15% will be the same 15% that already have the poorest connectivity thanks to the aforementioned factors,” he said.

Ofcom, the UK’s digital regulator, has said that gigabit broadband is now available in a quarter of all UK residences – that’s around 8 million homes. The new figure was stated in its annual Connected Nations report which looked at the availability of broadband and mobile phone services across the country.

The report also states that full-fibre broadband is now available in just over five million homes which represents an increase of 80% compared to last year. According to the regulator, full-fibre is more reliable than the old copper wires and can cope better with peak usage and severe weather.

The UK government recently announced that it was aiming to make gigabit connections available to 85% of residences by 2025. It was initially aiming for 100% but scaled this goal back and as a result, those in rural areas could be left with slower connection speeds.

Friday’s report says that Johnson’s original target was unachievable and doubts that the 85% figure can be met within five years – a delay that could leave businesses and homes with slow broadband.

“We are increasingly concerned that those in rural areas may have to pay more and may reach gigabit broadband speeds late.
“We remain unconvinced that if and when rural users finally do get gigabit broadband they will enjoy the same choice of service provider and the same protections as their urban counterparts,” the report said.

The good news continues for independent full-fibre platform CityFibre, as it racks up its millionth home in its nationwide network roll-out, after receiving more than £1.25bn of new investment and extending its network build partnership with engineering and construction giant Bechtel.

The company said that the million home milestone indicates that CityFibre is on track with its £4bn investment programme to reach up to 8 million homes by 2025, representing approximately a third of the UK market.

“With a million homes now able to access our Full-fibre connectivity and more added every day, we are focused on supporting our consumer ISP partners to drive service take-up,” said CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch.

Going forward, CityFibre is also in discussions with the Government to explore opportunities to support Building Digital UK’s Project Gigabit programme to bring full-fibre to rural communities across the country.
