Teething problems
Nothing 1's creator, China-born Carl Pei, 32, who co-founded phone company OnePlus and is highly regarded in the smartphone industry, told BBC News he wanted to "make tech fun again" - for consumers and investors.

The company says it has received more than 200,000 requests for pre-orders of the £399 phone - about half the price of an average iPhone - manufactured in China and India.

'Huge challenge'
But Nothing 1 - despite a fair amount of hype, not least because of the high-profile names behind it - has "a mountain to climb", according to Ben Wood, from CCS Insight.

"The smartphone market is frighteningly competitive and is dominated by Apple and Samsung, who have incredible resources," he said.
"The rest of the addressable market is a firefight between numerous Chinese manufacturers desperate to grab share, making it even harder for a new entrant to break into the segment.

Nothing Phone (1) to go on sale in Japan

After a fairly successful launch for a startup and new smartphone industry entrant, the Nothing Phone (1) is now going on sale in Japan.

While the device is by no means a flagship, it has a compelling design, clean Android 12 build, plus some other interesting traits for a sub-$500 phone. Nothing CEO Carl Pei confirmed that the US wouldn’t see his first smartphone release since leaving OnePlus right away. It’s not clear if it will come at a later date at this stage, but this first expansion into a new region could be a good sign.

Japan represents the first region to get the Nothing Phone (1) with the official and not yet verified Twitter account confirming that the device is available for pre-orders from August 10. Potential buyers will be able to get their hands on the smartphone from August 19.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778+ smartphone includes a 120Hz OLED, 4,500mAh battery, plus that interesting Glyph-lighting panel at the rear and a transparent backplate. The 50-megapixel camera setup consists of a Sony IMX766 main sensor and Samsung JN1 ultra-wide.

Nothing recently dropped the advertised peak brightness of the phone (1) after it was discovered that the handset's screen is only capable of hitting 700 nits as it stands, but the company maintains that the original claim is correct.

The controversy stemmed from Nothing's advertising of 1,200 nits of peak brightness for the phone (1). However, a test performed by German tech site ComputerBase revealed that the Nothing phone (1) could not achieve a brightness higher than 700 nits despite efforts to create scenarios that would cause it to achieve its advertised rating.

Nothing clarifies that this is due to software limitations.

"The hardware is capable of reaching up to 1,200 nits peak brightness, but this is currently capped by the software to 700 nits," a company spokesperson told Android Central. "This decision was made to ensure a balanced user experience regarding heat and battery consumption."

BTW, has anyone heard of this, and would you consider using it? With this new Mode Phone you can actually earn money by using it. Not that I would recommend it because people are spending way too much time on their phones.

Nothing is finally bringing the Phone (1) to the U.S. through a beta program

When Nothing launched the Phone (1) back in July last year, the United States was one of the countries that did not get its hands on the device. According to the company itself, this is because the phone may not work reliably on U.S. networks. That might be about to change soon, however, as Nothing has recently announced that it's bringing the Phone (1) to the U.S. through a beta program.

They are making this possible through the Nothing Beta Membershi p, a new membership program for those in the U.S. who want to test out the Nothing Phone (1). "Phone (1) was not originally released in the U.S. but it’s set to be an important market to us," Nothing stated. "By giving our American audiences access to the Nothing Beta Membership, we can get to know them better and incorporate their input."

The membership will cost $299, which will entitle users to a black Nothing Phone (1) with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. They will also have an opportunity to claim a Community Black Dot, a non-fungible token (NFT) of a video of a black dot bouncing inside a transparent cube.

Nothing notes that not all U.S. carriers will fully allow the Phone (1) to operate on their network. For instance, 5G, VoLTE, and VoWIFI will not work on AT&T networks, while 5G and CDMA networks are not supported on Verizon. However, Phone (1) owners will be able use some 5G bands on T-Mobile.

Nothing’s next phone will launch in the US later this year

Nothing’s next smartphone, the Phone 2, will be getting an official US release, the company’s CEO Carl Pei has confirmed in an interview with Inverse. Although the Phone 1’s transparent rear design and flashing light strips didn’t see a US release after the company chose to focus its attention on Europe and Asia, Nothing has decided to change its focus for its 2023 flagship. “We decided to make the U.S. our No. 1 priority in terms of markets,” Pei tells Inverse.

Hints of a US launch came earlier this month when Nothing announced a beta program for American buyers, which would supply them with a Phone 1 handset for a $299 fee. But the program is a far cry from an official US release, with Nothing cautioning that devices won’t support 5G on AT&T and that coverage on Verizon is very limited. In other words, the program is a way for people to test the hardware, but it’s not ready to replace a primary smartphone for US buyers.

“When you make a smartphone for the U.S. you need to work with the carriers on certification and adapting some of their features into your OS,” Pei tells Inverse.

As for what form the Phone 2 will take, Pei is cagey. “We’re developing a smartphone that’s more premium than the Nothing Phone (1) and software will be a big focus area for us,” he says.
