    Could use some µBlock help...

On updating filter lists, I have auto-update selected. Any ideas on how often the updates occur, and is there any need to use the Update now function?
What about 'Purge all caches' button. Does that purge cache that contains all the blocked items? What cache, exactly, is being purged?
And is it in any way an advantage to purge cache, say, performance-wise?

    TY!

    @gorhill,

Can you also update the Opera extension like the Chrome extension?

    Thanks

@gorhill Any further thoughts about a third "mirroring" extension referenced in post #334? Well, probably, never mind. The good lud knows you're already insanely busy with "block" and "matrix" extensions already. Probably mid to end 2015 would suffice before even considering venturing off to a third perfectionist's (quite apparently-- good for you -- definitely good for us) extension project. I've already ditched ghostery, adblock, adblock plus, (yada, yada) in lieu of your two exquisite extensions. So pardon me for hoping/wondering out loud about the prospect of the third aforementioned browser extension. Who knows... maybe in the near future you may consider changing your posture of "not accepting donations" (if another post I read is correct) and finally buckle down to developing your own browser. In any event, your talent shines and I thank you for that!

It is nice if you can support Firefox, Firefox's user tired of AdBlock Plus memory and some switch to SilentBlock or SimpleBlock already but lack a lot feature.

I was using uBlock. It's faster and lighter then AB or ABP. But after seeing it taken down from the Chrome store and gorhill arguing with them I lost all faith in this ad on. And like others it blocks way too much by default.

What are you talking about ?
µBlock and ABP are both on the chrome store. And they block (quite) the same stuff if you use the same filterset. :/
Gorhill arguing with who ? ABP team or Chrome team ? I don't know where you found this. It surely is in a bug tracker, and it is not a discussion for regular users as you and me.

But I wish you good luck without web content blocker.

Lol................Please do not argue with me unless you know what you speak of. Read the uBlock website. I also clearly stated that uBlock was removed from the Chrome store and gorhill was aruging with them. Them meaning Google. uBlock was down off the Chrome store for about a day till gorhill did what Googled asked of them. Do you honestly think I would make a comment without knowing what I speak of? Who said I do not have a content blocker?

    "
I was forced to bump up the version number due to:

    1. Me wanting to submit a new version of uMatrix: 0.8.1.1
    2. Being warned by the Chrome store that the description for the pt_PT version was too long
    3. Me closing Google Chrome and booting Chromium to address the issue
    4. Me fixing as best as I can the too long description and re-packaging uMatrix
    5. Me closing Chromium and launching Google Chrome again to re-submit the fixed version (Chromium crashes when opening the Chrome store..)
    6. Me realizing that for whatever reason, there is a pending published version of uMatrix as a replacement of uBlock
    7. Read carefully: I never ever clicked "Submit" at any time in all this
    8. Me panicking, as users of uBlock are about to end up with uMatrix instead
    9. Me panicking
    10. Me find the unpublish button for uBlock to prevent uMatrix being installed as an update of uBlock
    11. It worked, but now there is no longer a uBlock extension in the Chrome store
    12. Me resubmitting the new package of uBlock
    13. Store refusing, demanding a newer version number
    14. Me bumping version number of uBlock to 0.8.1.2 to make Chrome store stop complaining
    15. Finally submit works, had to fill in descriptions in all languages all over again, icons, screenshots, etc.
    16. Finally it's back in the store, as version 0.8.1.2, all else is same as version 0.7.2.1"

I believe cache here being refered to as filter lists loaded from disc. Maybe gorhill can comment on this.
Purpose of 'purge cache' here is to force the update of filter lists manually. And the cache will be built later on the updated lists, i think.

Yes. You didn't even read what you copy-pasted so nothing surprising. FYI, I already read it and it made me laugh, since it's a strange story with little consequences in the end fortunately.
µBlock was never taken down from store, and Gorhill never argued with Chrome team. It was just a weird behavior from Chrome store. But there's absolutely no reason to stop using an extension because of this story. Gorhill just explained why he bumped version number.

Plus at the end of your post, you say µBlock blocks too much, but it's just a matter of filterset. If you don't use any filterset, you won't have anything blocked. That's why I supposed you didn't understand content blocker and so I though you would not use one. I'd be curious to know what content blocker you use which does not block "too much".

Of course, I should ignore your post, but you know, when there are "too much" non-sense...

Can you quote an example where it blocks too much. Perhaps if sth is blocked which should not be, then it should reported to appropriate vendor lists. Most of the times issue relies with vendor lists. Or else you can dumb down its power by unchecking filter lists (as suggested by pilou42) such as social blocking lists...

Remember that is just a dev preview.
Even then it can be used as a daily driver for blocking functionality ;) And hell fast too. I have configured Noscript to allow all the scripts for now (later will replace with uMatrix once it is released). And given the job to uBlock to take care. :)

So I cannot seem to update Ublock lately. I checked the 'behind the scenes' and white-listed everything, but I noticed I don't get the 'google.ca' or 'allo' or 'googlestatic' to whitelist the "other" category as the example shows on github. I even disabled umatrix all together, but Ublock will not update. Is there a bug that I've missed? I've also changed all my security programs to trust or instal mode (even theough they didn't block anythign) just in case, but nothing seems to happen. Running 8.1.2, but it appears 8.2 is available, or am I misreading the release?

This is what I get in the behind the scenes section

I also can't seem to update uBlock to 8.2. I have Chrome behind-the-scenes all whitelisted so I don't think it's uMatrix that is causing the problem.

0.8.2.0 is the latest release available on the github Releases page:

0.8.1.2 is the latest available in the Chrome Store.

I took it down myself because I made a mistake somewhere and I saw uMatrix being about to replace uBlock. What you call "them" is actually the Chrome store web interface which has requirements, one of which is to not accept a version number which is lower or equal to the current version when submitting a new version. I never experienced any behavior from the Chrome store of getting in the way of having my extensions not published.

I now prefer to update the Chrome store during the week-end. The last couple of releases were done during the weekend.

The auto-update occurs every 3-4 days. The cache is a local copy of something fetched from a remote server, it's faster to read data locally then fetching every time remotely. The main purpose of purging the cache is to force uBlock to fetch the remote version -- which maybe has changed without uBlock having a way to know.
