Twitter’s Periscope video streaming service officially shutting down

Periscope, Twitter’s little-used video streaming service, announced today in a Medium post that they will be shutting down in March 2021.

In the post, the Periscope team revealed that they have been having declining usage and that the service has been in maintenance mode for some time now.
The team has therefore decided to remove the ability to create new accounts with the next release of the Periscope app, and remove it completely from app stores by March 2021.

Twitter recently purchased a service called Squad which offers similar video sharing, and it is expected to replace Periscope at a later date. In the mean time Twitter users can live stream video using the built-in functions on the app, as described here.

Twitter: Farewell, Periscope

Today, we’re sharing that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue Periscope as a separate mobile app by March 2021.

The truth is that the Periscope app is in an unsustainable maintenance-mode state, and has been for a while. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen declining usage and know that the cost to support the app will only continue to go up over time.

Although it’s time to say goodbye, the legacy of Periscope will live on far beyond the boundaries of the app itself. The capabilities and ethos of the Periscope team and infrastructure already permeate Twitter, and we’re confident that live video still has the potential of seeing an even wider audience within the Twitter product.

Well. That didn't last long. I actually got a kick from combing the map it had and corresponding a few times "live" in some conversations with reasonable peeps curious like me to share about daily life's work or play from worlds away in different weather climates and such. Its been some years now since I bothered. But seems is here one year and gone the next with those apps lifespan anymore.
