Twitter is rolling out its latest redesign on mobile and the web, tweaking the familiar appearance so that it offers greater accessibility and less clutter. If you spend enough time on the platform, you’ll likely immediately notice the font change. More subtle adjustments include adding greater contrast to some colors, getting rid of visual clutter, and more.

Back in January, Twitter detailed its new font called Chirp, the company’s first proprietary typeface.

In its update today, Twitter said that it is rolling out Chirp font and that going forward, all Western-language text will be aligned left. Beyond that, the update brings high contrast elements and a reduction in the blue colors typical of the platform, which Twitter notes will make tweeted content stand out more.

Today, we released a few changes to the way Twitter looks on the web and on your phone. While it might feel weird at first, these updates make us more accessible, unique, and focused on you and what you’re talking about.

In the near future, Twitter will also roll out new colors, “giving you a fresh palette,” the company said in a tweet.
Beyond that, Twitter notes that its latest redesign also “cleaned up a lot of visual clutter” for a simplified appearance.

The changes will appear on both mobile and web, with Twitter indicating that it has additional design updates in the pipeline for future rollouts.

Change is never easy, and Twitter users aren't afraid to complain. Those two truisms combined on Wednesday when Twitter unveiled a new design that included a new font, called Chirp, and higher-contrast colors. Almost immediately, users began to complain -- with many saying the new font gave them headaches. (This writer is getting them too.)

A Twitter spokesperson told me, "We tested the font and found that while it does take people a little time to get used to it, overall they like the change. We're listening to feedback about the font and will continue to improve it."

Twitter's Derrit DeRouen posted an entire thread about why the company felt a need to develop its own typeface, writing that, "for everyday use it must be sharp and legible (with good density), but with personality and distinctiveness."

After teasing its new font in January, Twitter made some major changes to its website and app design this week. But while Twitter framed these updates as making the platform “more accessible,” some accessibility experts say that these changes missed the mark.

Most noticeably, tweets now appear in “Chirp,” Twitter’s proprietary typeface, and the display has even more visual contrast between the background and text. Other updates made the interface less cluttered, removing unnecessary divider lines. For people with low vision, high-contrast design can make websites more legible, but the current contrast level is so high that it’s causing strain for some users.

Twitter far exceeds the minimum contrast standards set by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provides recommendations for making websites accessible to disabled people. But web accessibility isn’t one-size fits all — while some users may need a high-contrast display, others who suffer from chronic migraines might require a more muted experience. Research has also shown that dyslexic people tend to read faster when presented with lower-contrast text.

“When the update hit, I could immediately feel pain in my eyes, and within about half an hour, I was having a tension headache,” said Alex Haagaard, a design researcher and founding member at The Disabled List. “I have a lot of chronic pain, and I cannot deliberately expose myself to something that is going to be exacerbating my levels of pain, because then that has cascade effects.”

Twitter told TechCrunch that “feedback was sought from people with disabilities throughout the process, from the beginning. However, people have different preferences and needs and we will continue to track feedback and refine the experience. We realize we could get more feedback in the future and we’ll work to do that.”

It’s odd that Twitter neglected to add customization capabilities when it rolled out its higher-contrast display and new default typeface, since the company has a history of offering customization elsewhere in its user experience.

“The main issue is that the default contrast should [meet the WCAG standards] and users should be able to change it. It’s not hard, right?” Henry said. “It’s fine to have a default font, but you have to make it customizable. Even if it was the most readable font known, it would still be important to allow people to change it because of individual differences.”

Twitter tones down new buttons after complaints of eye strain
People complained about getting headaches and eye strain due to Twitter's accessibility changes.

A few days ago, Twitter rolled out a number of design updates meant to make the website more accessible.

As TechCrunch and CNET note, complaints started pouring in after the update went out, with people reporting eye strain and headaches caused by the changes. Now, the social network has announced that it's adjusting its buttons' contrast levels to make them easier on the eyes.

Twitter said it made the adjustment after people sent in complaints that the "new look is uncomfortable for people with sensory sensitivities." The company's accessibility account started asking for feedback a day after the updates went out, promising to track it all.
The button is now filled in with black for accounts you've yet to follow and shows up with a white background for accounts you're already following. It used to be the other way around.

Last week Twitter started rolling out its new Chirp font across its apps, including the one on Windows 10. While Twitter designed the font to be legible and have good density, an issue on Windows 10 made characters difficult to read. Twitter has identified the issue and is working on a fix.

While the issue on Windows 10 appears to make the Chirp font look worse than Twitter wants it to, many dislike the design of the font, even when rendered properly.

It's still painful. I want an anti-aliased font, not a "clean edged" font that belongs on printed paper. I'm sick of print typographer purists imposing their aesthetic sense on digital products. Not a single person on this font has experience in digital typography/ why

The Chirp font is too monotonous and makes it difficult to read. x-height also seems to be small.
Why not give users the choice of selecting their own font? There are plenty on Google Fonts.

In March, after controversies due to its algorithm, Twitter started testing a new way to preview images on the platform. A few months later, it launched the ability to view larger image previews for iOS and Android. Now, this feature is finally arriving for web users as well.

According to a post by Twitter Support, this feature is rolling out today to all users. The company writes:

“Pic looking good in the Tweet composer? That’s how it will look on the timeline.”
This means, when a user sends a single picture to Twitter, it will appear bigger than before, so you won’t have any problem with the algorithm choosing what part of the image to feature in your timeline.

Another feature the company announced a few months ago was the ability to upload and view 4K images on the app. Unfortunately, it’s still in beta test for some users, and it’s unclear when or whether this function will ever fully launch.

Previously, if you wanted to reply to tweets, you would have to click on the reply icon (the "chat bubble" icon) which would open up a dedicated modal window through which you could respond to a tweet. A screenshot of this can be seen above.

While that UI is still present, Twitter has now added another way that does not require opening the modal window. This is being done by offering a new UI element that shows a text box with the same "Tweet your reply" hint below the bottom of every tweet that you click on. This can be seen in the screenshot above.

It's unclear if this change is being made available to everyone right now or if it is being rolled out in a staggered manner. We have only seen a few tweets from Twitter users who have noticed the change.
Another minor but noticeable change is that the size of the icons in your search result history is being increased.

Some users are reporting that they can now post Twitter statuses, which lets them tag posts like they’re retro MySpace moods. Some of these statuses include “Spoiler alert,” “Shower thoughts,” “Picture of the day” and, for some reason, the very redundant “Current status.” Right now, users can’t customize their status — you’ll just have to choose from Twitter’s existing list.

“For a limited time, we are testing a feature that allows you to add a status topic from a predetermined list to your Tweets to provide more context for your followers,” Twitter told TechCrunch. “So whether you are about to drop a hot Tweet thread, share your shower thoughts, or have a bad case of the Mondays, your Tweets can better convey what you are up to.”

But status updates don’t really have a clear use case. Sure, you can save a few characters by making your tweet’s status “A thread” instead of typing out “A thread” and adding the string emoji. But it doesn’t seem like something users are over the moon about, at least initially.

Some users are also confused because Twitter is testing so many features at once, but not all of them have fully rolled out. Collab tweets, Twitter Circle and downvoting (which first appeared last year) are all still testing.

Its a failure media platform for me since they still can't do simple chronological order by default or normally. They suggest trying to do this and that but bullcrud, that should be a no brainer. I like to keep up with world events better since websites are totally gummed up with throwing crud in your face either on landing or after a few seconds. That ad infested crap incenses me to no end. Or "Subscribe To Read More Of The Article". Kiss off greedy fools. Never feed them they are already money stuffed as is.

Twitter is starting a new test that allows users to post images, videos and GIFs in one multimedia tweet. Until now, users could post only one form of media per tweet. But this new format will shake things up and let people combine multiple formats in one tweet.

The company confirmed the test and said it’s available to some users for a limited time. It added that accounts can add tags to both photos and videos in the tweet.

“We’re testing a new feature with select accounts for a limited time that will allow people to mix up to four media assets into a single tweet, regardless of format. We’re seeing people have more visual conversations on Twitter and are using images, GIFS and videos to make these conversations more exciting. With this test we’re hoping to learn how people combine these different media formats to express themselves more creatively on Twitter beyond 280 characters,” the company said in a statement.
If we go by screenshots from the app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi back in April, users will see different media in a carousel in the tweet composer, and they can easily remove or add them or change their order.

Twitter is seemingly working to remind people that interesting tweets are something you should click, load, and view while logged into the company's ad-funded service, not merely see in a screenshot. That's why some users are seeing a "Share Tweet?" pop-up whenever the Twitter app notices them taking a screenshot.

Social media analyst Matt Navarra noted the two kinds of nudge prompts in a tweet: "Copy link" and "Share Tweet." TechCrunch noted that some of its staff members were receiving the prompt and pointed to another tweet in which Twitter provided both "Copy link" and "Share Tweet" buttons.

In a bid to combat misinformation, Twitter last year rolled out Birdwatch, which allows people to write a note on a misleading or factually wrong tweet that explains why the content is off base. After testing the function for over a year, those notes will now be visible to users in the US.

Users can apply online to become part of the Birdwatch team; once approved, Birdwatchers can propose notes that add context to a tweet. The wider community then rates those notes.

CoTweets allowed two accounts to co-author posts that appeared simultaneously on users’ profiles. As of last July, select users in the US, Korea, and Canada were able to use CoTweets after the company began testing the idea last spring. While CoTweets were still limited in rollout, many people anticipated they’d be helpful for brands doing collaborations or announcements.

As of today, users with the feature won’t be able to post new CoTweets. Existing posts will be visible for another month before they revert to retweets. Twitter’s announcement says the company is “still looking for ways to implement this feature moving forward” but didn’t offer specifics.
