Probably overkill but I do it anyway:)

Every few weeks I turn off my 3rd party av and when Defender has signalled that it has taken charge again, I then right-click on the Defender taskbar icon and chose to 'Check for protection updates'. There's usually one.
When that is done I go to Win Updates in Settings and update the definitions files.
    Then I re-enable my 3rd party av.
Why I do this is just in case for any reason my AV doesn't run then I would be left with quite an outdated Defender as my defence. So I've reasoned that I'm just watching my back:D

A simpler way might be to just enable MD Periodic Scanning every now then.

Well my way is simple and just every now and then too :)
I'm not too interested in the scanning... just the updating.

I just disabled Norton and MD did not take over. I would have to uninstall Norton, so in my case, if I only wanted to update MD, Periodic Scanning would work. I wouldn't have to run a scan with MD, just update its database. ;)

For some strange reason, last time I did run a scan while Norton was installed, Norton would run a Full System Scan after each MD quick scan.

Seems not to make a difference with Norton.

Open Taskmanager and look under the Details tab. Is anything still running from Norton?

Sorry, that isn't under the Details tab, but same applies there too.
