Probably overkill but I do it anyway Every few weeks I turn off my 3rd party av and when Defender has signalled that it has taken charge again, I then right-click on the Defender taskbar icon and chose to 'Check for protection updates'. There's usually one. When that is done I go to Win Updates in Settings and update the definitions files. Then I re-enable my 3rd party av. Why I do this is just in case for any reason my AV doesn't run then I would be left with quite an outdated Defender as my defence. So I've reasoned that I'm just watching my back
Well my way is simple and just every now and then too I'm not too interested in the scanning... just the updating.
I just disabled Norton and MD did not take over. I would have to uninstall Norton, so in my case, if I only wanted to update MD, Periodic Scanning would work. I wouldn't have to run a scan with MD, just update its database. For some strange reason, last time I did run a scan while Norton was installed, Norton would run a Full System Scan after each MD quick scan.
Almost. Right clicked the tray icon > Disable Auto-Protect. I didn't do the firewall though. I'll get back to you shortly. Got a few chores to do.
