Truecrypt partition not recuperable

    Hello everybody,

    I have a external HD (WD, 1TB), which I did format under Ubuntu (probably 12.04). I then made a partition which had the same size of the HD and encrypted it with Truecrypt. Some days ago, I connected the HD to my PC and couldn't see any partition to mount with Truecrypt. I tried to mount the disk, without any success.

    I analysed the HD with testdisk and these are the results:

    TestDisk exited normally.
    The quick search finds the partition, but only when the partition table type selected is "none"; if I select "Intel", testdisk finds two (or more in the deep search) FAT32 partitions and I have no idea where they come from. Unfortunately I can't write the partion table to the disk when "none" is selected.

    Anyone has some ideas?

    What does TrueCrypt show in the Select Device screen? Just the hard disk?

    Which programs can see the partition? Can Ubuntu see it?

    I wouldn't choose "Intel" as the partition type, as it is obviously a Linux partition. "None" is probably best, but at the moment I don't have a handy test system available to try all of this out on, so I can't go into details on your particular scenario, which is outside of my current skillset.

    Hello dantz,

    the disk space seems to be unallocated, no program can see the partition. Truecrypt only shows the entire disk and I can't decrypt it – which is logical because I encrypted the partition and not the disk.

    Be aware that when you encrypt a partition you are not encrypting the entire disk. There will still be a plaintext MBR and a partition table at the beginning of the disk, plus a small amount of mostly empty space before the partition's starting offset. The encrypted partition itself will consist of one humongous block of random data from beginning to end. There may be a small amount of unallocated space beyond the partition's ending offset.

    If TC doesn't list the partition in the Select Device screen then it's possible that your partition table has been lost. At this point you should probably examine the disk with a hex editor. TestDisk shows that your sector size is 512 bytes, and you have a fairly recent version of Ubuntu, so the likeliest location for your partition's starting offset is 1048576 (decimal). Go there and look for a transition point between a large block of zeros and a very large (practically endless, in your case) block of random data.

    You can use the evaluation copy of WinHex to do this. You can also use HxD, which is a freeware hex editor, although I am not as familiar with it. I have included basic WinHex instructions (for locating and recovering TrueCrypt volumes) in quite a number of threads in this forum. I will try to find a good one to link to so I won't have to write it all again, but feel free to browse for it yourself. Not all of the instructions will apply to your situation, but depending on what you find, I think that many of them will.

    I finally solved the problem :)

    Adding a new partition on the original disk didn't work, because TestDisk did reset the last cylinder value to 121600 every time I inserted the right one (121601).

    So I decided to give the disk copy (1TB on a 2TB disk, there should be no value limitations for that size) and indeed I could write the partition with the values found by TestCrypt. After restarting the computer TrueCrypt could see the partition, I restored the volume header from the backup embedded in the volume using it and with the right password the volume was successfully mounted and decrypted.
