I run spybot search and destroy, Lavasoft Ad-aware, and Pest Patrol very often. I run trend micro now and then to see if they missed anything. Today I ran trend micro and it reported:

    troj Revop.a, non-cleanable, c:\windows\preinstt.exe

I ran spybot and ad-aware (both updated) and found nothing. This forum tells me to run hijackthis and to post the log, so here it is....

    Hi Customer717,

You did best putting up the Hijack log. You do have some craps in your computer. But first let me know whether you use XFire Messenger or play "Ultimate Arena" online games.

    Regards

    First download CWshredder from https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files
    c:\windows\preinstt.exe

    and Delete these folders

    C:\WINDOWS\nsdb

    Now Run CWshredder
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Reboot After running cwshredder and as soon as possible follow this advice:
Now as CWS Hijacks are normally installed via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then
Reboot normally & you should be clear, but post a new log to check

    Thank you for the help.

    Subratam,

I do not use Xfire. I installed it a bit ago as some online friends thought it would be useful to find each other in games, but I never ended up using it. I uninstalled it when I read your post. I do not know what "Ultimate Arena" is.

    Dvk01,

I followed your directions and will post my new log below. The CWshredder thing did not seem to find anything when it ran its thing (and yes all windows were closed). Not sure if this means anything. I will run the trend micro scan again right after I post this message. Here is my new log:

    Good Job customer717,

Your log looks pretty fine now and neat too. :) Do post the result of Online scan as that would be nice to have for better review. Good job

I ran the scan and it found preinstt.exe and the folder again, but now in the recycle bin. Oops. I could not empty the bin, so I rebooted in safe mode and tried again. It worked.

I rebooted again and scanned again. The troj revop.a was no longer detected; all looks clean now.

    Thanks guys.
