Too many Iexplore.exe files open

I recently noticed that I have running in my processes list several (5) files called ri.exe.
I'm not sure what they are but I also have noticed that I have a lot of iexplore.exe running, sometimes as many as 5 or 6. What is strange is that I don't use IE anymore. I only use Firefox as my browser.
Any attempt to shutdown the iexplore file just opens another one.
I am concerned that (and always have been) that IE gives MS a way to backdoor anyone's computer on which the Windows platform is installed but this is way more than I bargained for.
Anyone one got any ideas?
