Requiring an accounting of what data had been collected, who it had been shared with, and how it had been used. That would help a lot. And it would be quite overwhelming for users. Most very likely have no clue what's collected and how it's used. And yes, such transparency would allow users to better choose what to share, and with whom. But I suspect that ultimately it would dramatically reduce the information flow. And that would arguably mean less profit for Google, Facebook, etc. Who basically have no substantial income stream that doesn't depend on collecting and monetizing data from users. And it's easy for Apple to say, obviously, because overpriced devices are their primary income stream. Enforced by draconian hardware-compatibility restrictions (i.e., only our hardware).
