...Going to upgrade 2 laptops and an All-in-one PC (all Windows 10 on HDD) for my sister that still run fine except for the slow HDD performance. Currently going to recommend:

    All-in-one - https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...olid-state-drive-mz-76e500b-am/12370881.aspx?
    or
    All-in-one - https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-BX300...UTF8&qid=1537025778&sr=8-1&keywords=crucial%2

    Better Laptop - https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-BX300-240GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0742BC3DQ?th=1

Budget Occassional Use Laptop - https://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-BX300-120GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B073W3Q96S?th=1

Chose the BX Series over the newer MX because it's MLC over TLC. Correct choice?

What is the better choice for the all-in-one? I'm assuming it's the Samsung?

    Thanks!

I would go either with crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 evo (whatever is cheaper at the time you buy).
MX300 vs BX300 (MX300 suffered from performance impact when >65% full, the bx300 and mx500 do not have this problem).
MLC vs TLC (MLC has longer lifespan)
3D-MLC vs 3D-TLC (3D-TLC has longer lifespan and is faster but 3D-MLC drive run a bit cooler; when compering mx300 and bx300)

FWIW- Recently picked up a Crucial 500Gb SSD and now it's still laying right where I set it a month a ago. I don't even dare install notorious Win 10 on it simply because I fear that platform would wear it out before it's time, and Crucial isn't exactly a mediocre low line brand. Still somewhat new in this SSD biz.

I almost betcha that with crucial MX500 that system will be set for performance and durability for a very long time.

Best of luck with your choices.

There's nothing to worry about, as SSDs can handle a very large amount of data written to then. The following article from Ontrack is a good read.
How Long do SSDs Really Last?

    EASTER,

You could install a new Win10 on your SSD every day for the next 10 years and still only reach half the suggested TBW.

May be. But in it's current form and fashion this user has much greater confidence in Windows 8.1 overlayed on a brand new SSD then the alternative. The feel good factor works better with installing 8.1 to a spanking new hardware in comparison

    I should have said Win7, Win8 or Win10.

...Sorry for the late reply but have had a busy week.

Sister was heading out of town so quickly ordered the BX300 120GB to get started on the budget laptop and will order the rest when she gets back. Finished the install off last evening and Man, what a difference. Like night and day! Chose the BX series for the laptops as neither should exceed 50% full. She wants the Samsung for the all-in-one because that's a brand she's familiar with.

MLC vs TLC Debate - thanks for the input on this. Elsewhere, i would always see get the MLC one. But i guess these days, either is fine.

    @EASTER - "Don't fight change, Embrace it"!

I liked XP, felt 7 was Meh, couldn't stand 8 but LOVE Windows 10. Just super smooth for me on my 2 machines. Just upgraded my sister's budget Samsung laptop that came with a SLOW 5400rpm HDD (everything felt sluggish opening) with a SDD and a fresh and up to date Windows 10 install and WOW - what a difference. This 5 year old laptop doesn't feel budget any longer and is now useful. Her daughter will be happy!

Like an idiot at the last minute opted to go with Windows 10 on new SSD. One thing I discovered interesting.

I used a HDD tether to connect to the new set up, copied over some folders of my classic TV shows that are getting hard to find anymore, and some programs etc.

In this fashion-Windows 8.1 active system-connected the new SSD with Windows 10 via tether-copied over my programs and when I reinserted the SSD I found that not a single transfer went through even though it prompted each time I need Admin and I allowed.

So if nothing else, that was a pretty cool security measure. :)

...Somewhat off topic but since it pertains to this new SSD and Windows 10 install, would like to ask it here if i may.

I plan on taking just 1 image of this new install on the budget laptop. Since i already have M Reflect installed on my laptop which has 2 drives (1 SSD, 1 HDD), can i connect the budget laptop to mine and image it from my laptop storing said image on my storage drive?

    tobacco,

I'd boot the budget laptop from a Macrium boot disk and write the image to a USB HD. Is that what you intended to do?

...This laptop won't be used for anything too important so i don't plan on regular images - just 1 initial image to restore if need be. Which is why it would be faster and easier to do from my laptop if i could just plug the budget one into my laptop ( could my laptop see the budget laptop as a drive to image??)and image it from here if that is possible. It will be more involved imaging from the budget one if i have to go that route.

Can't be done I'm afraid. You could remove the budget laptop SSD and put it in a USB enclosure connected to the bigger laptop. This would allow you to make an image but I wouldn't be confident you could successfully restore that image in the budget laptop. The safe way is what I suggested in my previous post.

Or you could install Macrium on the budget laptop and create an image over your network to the bigger laptop.
