For those looking to backup their hard drives via imaging, will Macrium Free be enough? How does it match up with some of the paid software like Acronis, ShadowProtect, and Paragon?

I don't know how it fares against others, but it works a treat for me. It is fast enough. I use a bartPE boot image on my hdd, so restoring is done from a boot.ini option. Restore in about 6 minutes I think. Makes image (to another hdd) in about 3-4 minutes. XP Pro is compressed to approx 4gb.

My only problem is that they did not add an option to take image via boot CD.

Is that different from other image backup software?

Yes, I'd day so. But I haven't ever used freeware imaging software. I've used Image for Windows, Drivesnapshot and ShadowProtect and they all have that ability.

I'm very happy with it, works perfectly every time and no problem booting of the Linux CD... I have no need to use anything else... also fast to restore.

I now make a new image of both my partitions once a week and find this works well for my usage. Have tested restore and it did the job with no issues at all.

It's also very easy to use with an excellent interface... simple and reliable.

Macrium Reflect is both fast and reliable. Which is more than what I can say about ATI.
