This SIM Card Forces all of Your Mobile Data Through Tor October 22, 2018 https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...es-data-through-tor-brass-horn-communications
Nice idea. Of course, if you want to be cheapskate and willing to take risks, you can root your phone and make Orbot act as transparent Tor proxy so all the connections will be routed throught Tor network anyway.
Yup. As a Rooter here that is an entirely possible alternative however that need is never been the same as others on this end and root is used to stave off malicious junk from poking their way this direction only. Tor-only Sim Card does seem a pretty novel idea though and is likely to gain some traction going forward.
It's interesting that Android security model is black and white (either you have full power or very-limited power) while Linux that it's based on offers much more. Like file capabilities where you can give fraction of root super-powers to some app. For example, why can't the Orbot developers just give their app CAP_NET_ADMIN root power and nothing else? That would allow it to manage built-in firewall that's used for transparent proxy while still having absolute no other root powers. EDIT: Also, as a side note, Android app permission handling is still quite...horrible... Even tought they have improved it and Google Play improved, there is still very little that ordinary user can do when faced with choice of installing app and accepting the long list of "needed" permissions. It's not possible for ordinary user to know if all those permissions are really needed or not and most just tap "ok ok" if they want any chance at all to use the app. Basically as useless as Windows UAC where users click "yes yes" There must be better way...
