Thinking about a Mac; maybe hold off a bit

Got this from a fairly reputable source.
He hates M$ with a passion.
May not make current users happy, but ?promises a better future.

If you are thinking of Apple:

Is there any reason to wait? Yes.

Apple will be coming out with their 'Tiger' operating system soon.
Those who wait will get a voucher entitling them to a free upgrade.
That's a savings of over $100 right there.

Apple are also on their way to 64-bit computing. And there doesn't seem
to be any turning back. Apple's main processor today is the PowerPC 970
from IBM. This is a true 64-bit processor. The OS itself must move to
64-bit. And when it does, the old G4 processors from Motorola won't do
it any longer.

Apple are building a modicum of backward compatibility into Tiger and
its successors, but don't count on too much. Also, it's rather apparent
that 32-bit apps will run faster on a 64-bit OS than the same code
built as 64-bit, so this 'compatibility' will to a certain extent be
around for some time.

But when the OS goes to a 64-bit foundation, the G4s won't do it at
all. Anyone wishing to run those futuristic versions of OS X will have
to upgrade their boxes.

There have been rumours for some time now about 64-bit laptops, and
realistically Apple will have to do it sooner or later, and as things
stand right now time is a bit short: it's running out. Apple need a new
big thing this summer. Of course it's a race to get it ready, and of
course they've been working on this for years now.

Once the G5s come out there will be no turning back. And even though
you got a good deal on the PowerBook with the backlit keyboard, it will
be irrevocably outdated.

Apple moving to 64-bit? This could probably be the biggest success (or worst failure) for Apple!
