These keep coming back...

Our system was totally overrun, we are now using the spybot search and destroy several several times a day. DSO exploit and CleverEHooker.Jeired are cleaned off every single time.... whether i go online or not, they are obviously somehow reproducing. There are several others that occour occasionally.

the computer was totally clean with no popups at all, but i went looking up music lyrics and now can't run for more than a few seconds w/o a whole pile of 'em. the spybot seems to have taken care of the homepage switch.

Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip
Unzip to a convenient permanent folder, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

you didn't mention scanning with adaware, so:

1. Download and install Adaware (free edition) . (Click on "Adaware" in the left-hand column near the top at their website to download the free edition.)

2. Go to Start > Programs > Lavasoft and click on AdAware 6 to open the program

3. Look at the icons on the top right of the page and click on the ‘world’ and let AdAware update the spyware reference list

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected:
· Automatically save log-file
· Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
· Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select :
· Scan Within Archives
· Scan Active Processes
· Scan Registry
· Deep Scan Registry
· Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
· Scan my Hosts file
· Under ‘Click here to select drives + folders’, choose:
· All of your hard drives

3. Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select:
· Include additional process information
· Include additional file information
· Include environment information
· Include additional object details

4. Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select:
· Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
· Unload recognized processes during scanning
· Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
· Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
· Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
· Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’ and on the next screen choose ‘Activate in-depth Scan’ at the bottom of the page and then choose:
· Use Custom Scanning Options

7. Click ‘Next’ and AdAware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

8. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

9. REBOOT

i'm sorry, i feel a bit silly, but i don't know how to unzip it to a permanent folder.

when downloading it, i chose the 'save' option. it shows a zipped up folder as an icon, but when i click on ithe zipped folder, it opens to a file that allows me to deploy the scanning and log capabilities.

do i need to download it differently?

i re-downloaded the hijack according to peiter's directions- thanks peiter- and deleted the files you noted. i didn't find the other windows file either on computer search or in exlplore mode, so we may have already gotten it!

it had added a bunch of things to my internet favorites settings- but i assume that was earlier? i just noticed and deleted those too.

can you give me an idea of how to maintain a clean computer, now? i wouldn't want to bother you too much. i have adaware and spybot and i made the windows important updates automatic. is there a way that i can have them watchdog, or should i just run them every so often??

The Local Settings folder is hidden by default.
To "unhide" hidden files and folders:
Launch My Computer from the Desktop Icon.
Select View, Details.
Select the Folders button.
Select Tools, Folder Options. Then select the View Tab. Select the Show hidden files and folders radio button is selected
and that the Hide file extensions for known file types check box is unchecked. Once this is done, select Apply and then
Like Current Folder (located near the top of the Folder Options box). Then select OK.

i'm having trouble finding it. We have three 'desktops' set up on the computer and i have access to all of them, but it seems like there must be a way to affect the computer as a whole w/o having to go to each indiv desktop... am i just missing something, or do i have to do it piecemeal?

The file is starting from the HKLM key (Local Machine) which means it is active for every user.

Please download TheKillbox from here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=137426

Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Dad\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\mwavscan.com

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filename and path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Then make post a new HijackThis log.

Hi again,

in searching for the file i just 'killed' <G>, I went to the other desktops and found that they had 75-100 bad guys show up on spybot and adaware too... it seems that what i was doing on my desktop didn't clean theirs... ugggh! so i ran spy and adaware there too, and here are the logs from all three desktops.
