The “unpatchable” exploit that makes every current Nintendo Switch hackable

A newly published "exploit chain" for Nvidia Tegra X1-based systems seems to describe an apparently unpatchable method for running arbitrary code on all currently available Nintendo Switch consoles. Hardware hacker Katherine Temkin and the hacking team at ReSwitched released an extensive outline of what they're calling the Fusée Gelée coldboot vulnerability earlier today, alongside a proof-of-concept payload that can be used on the Switch.

"Fusée Gelée isn't a perfect, 'holy grail' exploit—though in some cases it can be pretty damned close," Temkin writes in an accompanying FAQ.

Inside Nintendo’s “perfect” method for detecting online Switch piracy

When hackers revealed an unpatchable exploit allowing deep system access in all existing Switch consoles back in April, some industry watchers worried that this would lead to widespread piracy for copyrighted games on the system. Additional work by longtime Nintendo hacker SciresM, though, lays out the relatively robust protections Nintendo has in place to detect systems playing pirated games online and to permanently ban those consoles from Nintendo's network.

SciresM's lengthy Reddit post goes into a good level of technical detail on how Nintendo authorizes games and systems when connecting to the Nintendo network. The core of the protections comes from a unique encrypted client certificate stored in the "TrustZone" core of every Switch unit.

Nintendo Found a Way to Patch an Unpatchable Coldboot Exploit in Nintendo Switch

Not long ago, a team of hackers calling themselves ReSwitched publicly disclosed a security vulnerability in the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip, which they called Fusée Gelée and could allow anyone to hack a Nintendo Switch gaming console to install a Linux-based operating system and run homebrew code and apps using a simple trick.

Similar hacking methods were already available, and new ones emerged after ReSwitched's disclosure of Fusée Gelée, but it would appear that Nintendo worked hard to patch the exploit, which the hackers called "unpatchable," and the company is now shipping revised Nintendo Switch units that are reportedly immune to Fusée Gelée and similar hacks.

Nintendo's solution to Switch bootROM hardware exploit has been cracked

During the course of this week, Nintendo released System Update 6.2.0 for the Switch although the changelog for the update was simply listed as being "general system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience". While that in itself may sound somewhat innocuous, it soon became clear that the gaming stalwart had brought the hammer down on both homebrew and privacy by attempting to address a previously discovered flaw in the Nvidia Tegra bootROM. This was done by rebuilding the secure boot process.

To fix security issues and give other bits of the Switch a premature spring clean, Nintendo pushed out the 7.0.0 firmware update on Tuesday. However, as Nintendo Enthusiast reports, the firmware was cracked in a mere four hours.

A hacker going by the name of ‘elmirorac' on Twitter was apparently the person who managed to break past Nintendo's new firmware
The situation is arguably a tad embarrassing for the Japanese gaming giant, as the 7.0.0 firmware was designed with shoring up the Switch's defences against hacker types.

The ease at which hackers seem to breeze past the Switch's cyber defences appears to be down to the console's use of Nvidia's Tegra X1 chip which has an "un-patchable" flaw at its silicon level that allows hackers to access the console's bootROM with relative ease.
