I don't think that service not accepting an alias is a downside of alias. It is rare and when it happens helps to spot fishy companies. In my opinion it is not a bug, it is a feature! Last but not least if service is not accepting alias you will know it right away when you try to sign up. So generally the only downside for them is the need to store them somewhere, which is not an issue for me since I use password manager.
