    That might cut down on the social-media insanity. But aren't there also beneficial uses? Such as access to knowledge during discussion?

    I can't believe that kids have smart phones due to the expense (I got a $1 a week allowance as a child) and that they were ever allowed in schools. When I went to school if you were caught with a calculator on your person in math class you were flunked, expelled from the class, and forced to retake it later.

    You couldn't do any of the above things with a slide rule. Amazingly enough I still have mine. :)
