Amazon's Alexa voice assistant has migrated to a lot of devices of late, including eyeglasses, ear buds and microwave ovens. Now, the company has revealed that it will run on devices with as little as 1MB of memory and a cheap Cortex-M processor. That means you can expect to see Alexa on all kinds of relatively dumb devices from lightbulbs to toys.
Up until now, Alexa required at least 100MB of RAM and an ARM Cortex-A processor.

"We now offload the vast majority of all of this to the cloud," AWS IoT VP Dirk Didascalou told TechCrunch. "The only thing that the device still needs to do is wake word detection." That means companies will be able to reduce material costs by as much as 50 percent using lower-powered chips from NXP, Qualcomm and others, he added.
Amazon didn't specify yet which devices might use this, but it could mean that you'll just need to yell at your light bulb if you happen to be out of voice range of an Echo or other device.

Amazon’s Alexa can now be used to change the subject during family disputes that take place over the Christmas period.

Research by the online retailer found 6.30pm on Christmas Day is the time when family arguments are most likely to break out.

As a result, the tech giant has added a feature to its smart speakers that prompts virtual assistant Alexa to step in with a “distraction technique”.

As Amazon is one of the industry leaders in smart home devices, it announced the Alexa-enabled Smart Oven in September. Until now, it had been available only for pre-order but the smart oven is available on Amazon's site for $250 as of today.
It also comes with the ability to see the temperature, informing consumers when the food is to their liking. The 'Scan-to-Cook' feature automatically configures the heating options for food bought from Amazon. Alexa, which is compatible with the smart oven, can inform users when their food is done so they don't need to keep on standing by the oven.

For the smart oven to work with Alexa, users need to pair it with an existing Echo device. As a convenience, Amazon is shipping out the Smart Oven with a free Echo dot.

Amazon’s Alexa is making its debut in the children’s toy room later this year, and I’m not too sure how I feel about it. KidKraft is taking a bet parents will be less hesitant when they get a look at the 2-in-1 Alexa Kitchen and Market, a 360-degree playset powered by a voice assistant.

The $299 2-in-1 Alexa Kitchen and Market debuted at Toy Fair 2020 and is powered by RFID sensors and, of course, Alexa. When kids trifle with the collection of accessories, Alexa walks them through recipes, helps make shopping lists, plays guessing games and provides a healthy dose of puns.
By bringing the play pattern of kitchen sets into a voice-driven toy, KidKraft is offering a liaison between children and AI.

But there are a few concerns that a toy of this budding breed creates. I can’t help but question the social implications of making Alexa a child’s on-demand playmate.

Device announcements might be very different during the 2020 pandemic, but that isn’t stopping Amazon from holding its customary fall Alexa event and launching new Echo products. The internet giant has sent invitations to The Verge and others for hardware news on September 24th at 1PM Eastern.

The company didn’t tease what it might unveil, saying only that it had “some news.” The event is also billed as invitation-only, so it might not be streamed for the public. Suffice it to say Amazon won’t be holding an in-person gathering like it did for the 2019 Alexa event.
Amazon can’t afford to be complacent with its 2020 Echo offerings — it could face much tougher competition before the year is over.

Amazon announced today that its experimental smart glasses are available to purchase for everyone. Echo Frames have now exited its testing phase, which began last year.

The product was first unveiled in September of last year when Amazon announced tons of devices in its Echo family and more lineups. The company then debuted Echo Frames as part of its Day 1 Editions program where customers can gain access to its new, invite-only devices for testing.

Simply ask Alexa to initiate a translation session for two languages—English and Spanish, for example—then start chatting. Say a phrase in either dialect, and Alexa will automatically identify the language and translate your words.
