My IE homepage has been hijacked with the ‘about:blank CoolWebSearch’ crap. I’ve been trying to get rid of it for about a week now but just when I thought it was safe to sleep soundly, the bliddy thing returned! Here’s a list of things I’ve done, all in ‘safe mode’ :

    1. I identified the offending .dll file as C:\Windows\System32\jbl.dll.
    2. I ran CW Shredder which identified the file and removed it.
    3. I ran Adaware which didn’t find it (although it found and removed other adware/spyware)
    4. I ran Spybot Search & Destroy which didn’t find the file.

It came back because I’m sure it’s done something with my registry settings to re-install the pest when I boot up.

I then repeated steps 2, 3 & 4 above and downloaded ‘Killbox’ and ‘killed’ the file.
I ran ‘reglite’ and, not surprisingly, it didn’t pick up the .dll file in my registry.

Last night, I repeated steps 2, 3 & 4 which didn’t identify the file anywhere.
I checked my homepage (ironically set as ‘about:blank’) and it wasn’t hijacked, even after reboot.

I’m not getting too confident as I suspect it might come back which is why I would like my HJT Log to be checked , please, in case there's something in my registry that might manifest itself. I would be most grateful : I'm a bit concerned about this one :

    'R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank'

    Does it look OK?

    Hi ArthurLee,

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSNSysRestore] C:\WINDOWS\System32\pc32.exe bg

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\eber.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WINT] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsvsu.exe

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\pc32.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\eber.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsvsu.exe

    Then boot normally and download:
    http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe

Doubleclick it and install in folder of choice on the root drive, in your case C:\

1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder

(note : it's best to post that report together with a HijackThis log in your topic, so experts can have a look as well)

    2. IF hidden dll was successfully found, run start.bat again and choose option 2. Hit '1' and enter dll name manually.

    3. If dll was not found after first running start.bat :

Run start.bat again and choose option '2'. You must reboot after doing so.

    4. Download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

    5. Ask for a new hijackthis log, a new output.txt after the fix

    6. You can also run CWShredder finally to clean up other entries

    Regards,

    Pieter

Thanks for the very quick response Pieter. I'm very impressed. I'll try your suggestions when I get home tonight. Just one question : Initially, when I check the items you have highlighted in HijackThis, would it be OK to do this in safe mode? I'm worried in case booting normally will awaken a potential monster? Or would it not matter either way?

    Thanks.

The instructions were written from the assumption you were booted already. It is easier to start in safe mode straight away. You should be able to remove the files without rebooting then.

    Hi Pieter

Followed instructions. Only file not found was eber.exe. Anyway, here's the files. The first one is the dllfix log and the second one is the HJT log. Can you please check them out and let me know your findings? Thanks very much.

Good job sofar. Continue with step 2 in my previous post.

This is the dll you want to get rid off:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\MS.DLL

    Regards,

    Hi Pieter

So far so good! I cannot get rid of the file C:\Windows\System32\ms.dll. I ran dsllfix as instructed but when pressing '2' and inserting the path of the file, when I press 'enter' I get the message 'The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value'.

I've tried deleting the file manually (in safe mode too) and with killbox but it just won't allow me to delete it. Any ideas?

At the moment, my IE homepage is OK. :)

    Thanks

    Hi ArthurLee,

Let´s hope it stays that way. Check if Windows and IE are fully updated, run a full AdAware scan.
Post back in this thread if the "hijack from he!!" returns.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Thanks ever so much Pieter. I'm very grateful for your help. I'll keep a close watch on my IE Homepage and don't worry, you'll be the first to know if it manifests itself again! I'm becoming a little paranoid though ; I'm scanning with Adaware, Spybot, CW Shredder and Norton Antivirus about twice a day and I now have Spywareblaster & Spywareguard installed.

I'm sticking with you as I've found this forum to be the most helpful and the responses have been very quick indeed.

    Thanks again. :)
