    Tech-Protect is a virus protection system for computers running Windows. It uses change monitoring to alert you to changes that might be the result of infection by an unknown virus. It provides a user interface shell for Frisk Software Internernational's F-Prot for Dos virus scanner, which it uses to identify known viruses. Tech-Protect can detect and automatically remove many common Internet mass-mailing worm viruses.

    The main benefits of Tech-Protect are:

    * it's easy to use;
    * the lowest cost anti-virus (free for personal, non-commercial use);
    * probably the smallest download size of any Windows anti-virus;
    * the lowest resource usage;
    * does not cause conflicts with email or web browser software;
    * uses the top-rated F-Prot scanning engine;
    * automatic online updating;
    * easy updating of workstations from files held locally on a network;
    * automatic removal of most mass-mailing worm viruses.

    The disadvantages of Tech-Protect are:

    * some functionality is not available under Windows 95/98/Me;
    * reportedly, the F-Prot for Dos scanner may hang when scanning some folders on drives formatted using NTFS. We have not experienced this, but F-Prot's developers acknowledge that such problems may occur, and don't claim that F-Prot for Dos can be used under NT-family operating systems;
    * it does not support integration with the Windows XP Security Center (new in SP2.)

    In practice, Tech-Protect provides pretty effective virus protection for most computers running any version of Windows, from Windows 95 to Windows Server 2003. Frisk Software's own F-Prot for Windows would be more effective still, being more tightly integrated into Windows. It's also exceptionally inexpensive. But if it slows your system too much, or you want something that's free, or prefer a different user interface, or would like to be warned when executable files change, Tech-Protect will do a good job for you.
