System76 Reportedly Developing Their Own Rust-Written Desktop, Not Based On GNOME

System76's Pop!_OS Linux distribution already has their own "COSMIC" desktop that is based on GNOME, but moving ahead they are working on their own Rust-written desktop that is not based on GNOME or any existing desktop environment.

Stemming from a Reddit discussion over the possibility of seeing a KDE flavor of Pop!_OS, it was brought up by one of their own engineers they are working on their "own desktop".

System76 engineer and Pop!_OS maintainer Michael Murphy "mmstick" commented that System76 will be its own desktop. When further poked about that whether that means a fork from GNOME, the response was "No it is its own thing written in Rust."

Word of System76 making their "own" desktop not based on GNOME does follow some recent friction between Pop!_OS and GNOME developers over their approach to theming and customizations. Ultimately it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Downloaded the current release this week-end.
The installer insists on having a 512MB /boot/uefi/ partition.
Mine is 100MB, and out of the question I play with my windows partition to make room for that.
So I didn't install PopOS.

Wait... Pop OS doesn't have Secure Boot support?

I said I downloaded the current release.
As far as I know it doesn't include their new desktop yet.
As for Secure Boot, I don't know.
My experiment with PopOS stopped right there.

System76 teases features coming in homegrown Rust-based desktop COSMIC

US Linux kit vendor System76 has been working on a new desktop environment for at least a couple of years, word of which was leaked out in a Reddit discussion in 2021.

System76's own Linux distro, Pop!_OS, uses the GNOME desktop with some of the company's extensions and customizations, and some GNOME team members were less than delighted to hear that System76 was planning to go its own way.

The work-in-progress desktop is called COSMIC, and the company has been teasing information about the new environment in recent blog posts. It's implemented in Rust and targets the Wayland display server. Back in November, System76 shared some details, including that the desktop would use the Iced GUI library as well as some illustrations of how the workspace configuration dialog would look.

Now, the first post of 2023 by the company reveals some more info and some screenshots. So far, System76's developers seem to be hard at work on the Settings app, including some options for display and virtual desktop configuration. They are moving options around based on feedback from testers, which implies a reasonable degree of completed functionality, if it is already advanced enough for testers to work with.

It seems likely that COSMIC is going to accelerate the development of a lot of Rust graphical tools and components, which should prove to be a benefit for the whole Rust ecosystem.
