    Hello,

I use kubuntu and the associated software.

I was viewing a video as a stream from a website when a page appeared on my pc telling me that this was a Microsoft Alert and that my pc had been infected with a virus (zeus, I believe). The verbal message ask me to call Microsoft on a number and they would tell me how to remove the malware.

I have not made the call. It seems odd that I would receive a page from Microsoft when I have not Microsoft software. I have had this message twice when streaming videos, I simply close the page.

As I use kubuntu do I need to find an anti-virus programme, or carry on. If the former, can you recommend a good programme?

    Thanks

    That video seems a scam.
I'd be more circumspect with that website...

The video seemed all right. That page (warning) just appeared, twice now, same site. I could try another feed from the website

The pop up message is a scam from that website. It has nothing to do with what OS you use. And the phone number in that page is certainly not a Microsoft number. It's the scammer's number. You are fine. Your OS is not infected. Just close the pop up window.

Indeed, and I'd avoid that website from now on.

The videos are good. If no harm is being done and the page returns I can just close it.

Just close it out, it's a scam. Some times i have to use the task manager to kill the browser. It happens most when I view sporting events online.

No one has mentioned the advisability of installing anti-virus or anti-malwale detectors/cleaners on a pc that uses kubuntu. Is it advisable. In my repository there appears to be only ClamAV and the GUI interface ClamTK.

I am particularly interested in ensuring the security and safety when using online banking

I doubt ClamAV is particularly effective on anything Debian based these days, and I've heard that it can produce a few false-positives. One of the reasons I switched to Ubuntu on my laptop was precisely to get away from the need for an AV.

Just install security software at browser level. uBlock Origin properly configured will get rid of those pop-ups and much else.

    Good idea for uBlock Origin.
But I hear the OP's question coming: what's a proper configuration?

Not sure if mine is qualified as "proper config" but it has been working very well for me. Screenshot from 2017-12-21 10-01-03.png

I'd leave the filters on stock and add this rule under My rules
    Code:
    no-popups: * true
    I'd also add
    Code:
    no-remote-fonts: * true
And would block third party frames as well, the GUI would look like this:
    Menu_004.png

Then I would whitelist on a per-site basis.
Check the Wiki for a more (very) comprehensive tutorial https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki

Well, if you use Linux and get a "Microsoft" popup telling you're infected, that does not quite add up.
Moreover, Microsoft would not contact you in this way ever.
Third, always verify links and numbers independently.
    Fourth, you're fine.
