This weekend, Super Bowl LIII will not only attract legions of football fans but it will also create a perfect environment for hackers, where they could steal your identity, hack into your phone, or steal your credit card information over Wi-Fi while you’re watching the game online.

The key attack vector, he says, is when online fans start searching for a way to watch the game for free. Millions of football fans will simply type “free Super Bowl” into a Google search and the links that appear might contain malware and spyware.

And for fans at the game, logging on to the stadium Wi-Fi is just as risky. At Super Bowl 50, researchers found over 100,000 cyber threats on the stadium Wi-Fi network, according to David.
“What fans don’t know is that while they’re dialing into the game, cyber criminals are dialing up the threats, trying to capitalize on people’s distraction,” he said.

Here’s how DHS prepared to keep hackers out of the Super Bowl

When the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams kick off in Atlanta on Sunday, a network of at least nine operational centers staffed by city, state, and federal officials will be humming with activity near the stadium to monitor for cyber and physical threats.

About 60 employees from DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) will be onsite — with a DHS cyber official at each operational center — making it one of the biggest DHS cybersecurity operations at a Super Bowl to date.

Last year, it was estimated that cyber thieves stole more than $24 million from victims through counterfeit Super Bowl merchandise and tickets alone. There have been numerous, credible scenarios reported about how adversaries could target the Super Bowl. It is well documented how nation-state operators have compromised and disrupted IT systems powering other global sporting events.

They need to recognize how cybercriminals work. Scammers use the Super Bowl and other sporting events to bait malicious email campaigns. Employees need to be educated about the perils of opening non-work emails with "Super Bowl" in the subject line.
