I just got this new today and hooked it up. It's a StarTech 5G4AIBS-USB-HUB-EU self-powered, 4-port USB hub. When I connect it to my laptop it does nothing: no power lights come on, no message from Windows that says it was recognized, and my USB flash drives don't work. Everything was working okay before with my old USB port; but when I hooked this one up, nothing.

It comes with it's own small power brick and it's lighted green so I assume it's working. I tried some different wall outlets just to be sure but no luck. I tried my old USB A-B cable and it still didn't work. The odd thing is, Device Manager recognizes it; and so does USB Device Tree Viewer. I tried updating the drivers but it said I already have the best drivers.

This hub is advertised and marketed to IT professionals, so maybe I don't have the right privileges or something. I'm signed on with an administrator account though, so I don't know.

I'm signing off for today but thought I would post this and see if anyone can help. I'll be back tomorrow with any news I might have. Thanks for reading.

Just came back in to report it's working now. I turned off my computer for about an hour and now everything looks okay. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I am glad you got it going and thanks for returning to post your followup message. :) That may help future readers with the same problem.

FTR, most likely you could have just rebooted to get the system to fully recognize and configure your laptop's USB port for the new device. That is, it has nothing to do with the laptop being off for "almost an hour". "Time" is not the factor, the reboot is.

While USB ports themselves are "hot-swappable" (no damage "should" occur by plugging in and unplugging a device when the computer is powered up), configuration of the system for "new" unfamiliar devices may not be automatic.

Hubs are often more tricky for computers because hubs are unconventional USB devices. Hubs are not the same and behave differently than, for example, external drives, thumb drives, cameras, keyboards, or mice - devices that connect directly to the computer.

Hopefully, your will work as expected from now on.
